KENYA : President William Ruto has ordered the immediate resolution of internal administrative issues in the struggling Moi University.
Moi University, once a prestigious high learning institution in the country, is staring at a bleak future, as the Varsity wrangles sink it further.
Speaking on Thursday, November 21, while making the State of the Nation Address in Parliament, President Ruto noted that he has given firm instructions for the issues to be addressed.
President Ruto maintained that the government introduced the new higher education funding model to pull out universities from financial crises.
“Recognizing financial challenges raised by our universities, we introduced a new funding model. This model gives priority to the most vulnerable students while also pulling our universities back from the brink of collapse.
“The remaining challenges for a few universities like Moi University are related to internal administrative and governance issues, which I have given firm instructions that they should be addressed,” President Ruto remarked.
Moi University has been facing challenges, including a prolonged lecturers’ strike due to payment issues, that led to the closure of the institution before it was recently reopened.
On Wednesday, the university’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kosgei appeared before the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) following summons.
Kosgei is being investigated by EACC over allegations of embezzlement of public funds amounting to Ksh2.2 billion.
“Following summons, Moi University Vice-Chancellor Professor Isaac Kosgei is currently before investigators at the Commission’s North Rift Regional Offices in Eldoret over the alleged embezzlement of public funds and procurement irregularities involving multiple infrastructural projects worth Ksh2.2 billion.
“The Commission is also undertaking investigations targeting top officials of the University of Nairobi and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology over related violations of the law,” EACC stated.
The Varsity, has been struggling for a while, with First Year Students, not having set foot in class as the Semester comes to an end. On the other end, Medical Student's, have been in school for ten years, studying a six-year course.
Earlier Plans to re-open the University that was closed following student Unrest amid Employees several Months Salary arrears wrangles, have all been futile, with postponement becoming the order each week.
Moi University however, has assured the 2024 graduands that their graduation Ceremony will go on as planned, scheduling it for December 19, 2024.
