KENYA : Directorate of the Criminal Investigations, DCI, detectives have been left confused after Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa and Former Limuru Mp Peter Mwathi presented themselves and refused to speak.
The Senator and his accomplice, had been summoned by the Detectives to their Kiambu Headquarters, to provide information on the Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's attack in Limuru.
Karungo, appeared before the DCI HQ, on Thursday December 5, just a day after the Senator claimed the investigative agency was trying to twist the case and turn them into suspects.
"We were summoned by the DCI to provide information that might assist Investigations regarding the Limuru incident, but they have turned the entire scenario around, We are now the Suspects" Karungo stated.
According to the Kiambu Senator and the Former Limuru Mp, they have since decided to practice their constitutional right to remain Silent.
" We have been in a boardroom at DCI HQ on Kiambu Road since 08:00 hours. We chose to exercise our constitutional right to remain silent and have declined to provide any information, as we are not obligated to assist the DCI with their investigation." Karungo Stated.
" In the meantime, we are doing nothing in this boardroom while the officers engage in extensive consultations outside. We are unaware of whom they are consulting, but I’m sure you can make an educated guess." the Kiambu Senator said.
" I am in the company of Peter Mwathi, former MP of Limuru, who also chose to remain silent." he added.
Kiambu Senator Karung'o Wa Thang'wa recently condemned the attack on mourners, during a funeral service in Limuru on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
The Senator, a vocal defender of Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was among leaders who had accompanied the former Dp to the event, before all hell broke loose.
Karungo Thang'wa, who was seated next to Gachagua during the goons attack, took to his social media pages on Facebook and X, Claiming the Attack was an attempt on Gachagua's life.
“It was an Assasination attempt, But the People’s Deputy President is safe. Asanteni sana, watu wa Limuru, for ensuring our safety. We will not be intimidated or silenced—now we know!” Thang’wa Posted
The Former Deputy, attributed the Limuru to the withdrawal of his government security.
Speaking after the harrowing ordeal, Gachagua expressed dismay at what he described as a deliberate exposure to violence.
“As Kenyans are well aware, earlier this week the government withdrew the final aspects of my security after the impeachment process we are contesting. Although we did not raise issue with this decision, it now appears it was intended to leave me vulnerable to such an attack,” he said.
“A specific group followed me as I went to my car, which they proceeded to attack with stones and iron bars. We literally drove out of the venue under a hail of rocks,” he revealed.
He expressed particular concern for the grieving family, who, despite their loss, were forced to flee for their safety.
Gachagua, who has been a vocal critic of the current administration, stated that such incidents would not deter him from standing with Kenyans.
“We will not be scared away from supporting those who need us in their moments of need. We just expect such a terrible moment of shame will not be repeated.”
This attack came a week after Gachagua claimed that security agents in unmarked vehicles have been trailing him everywhere he goes.
In an update on Wednesday, November 20, he also alleged that the agents have been taking notes of visitors who visit his residence.
"Security agents in unmarked cars have been following me wherever I go. They are parking at the entrance of my Nairobi residence, taking note of all my visitors, and they trail me whenever I leave the house, even all the way to my rural home in Nyeri," he claimed.
Gachagua noted it was important to share his predicament, adding that the government should be held accountable should any of the security agents harm him.
"This surveillance and intimidation of Kenyans was last witnessed during the era of the dreaded ‘Special Branch’ during the 24 years of Moi's misrule. In this era of extrajudicial killings, forced abductions, and disappearances by state agents, I have thought it important to share with Kenyans the harassment and intimidation I am going through and inform them to hold the state responsible if I am harmed by state agents. I request the state to leave me alone! You hounded me out of office, and you should now allow me to enjoy my peace as a private citizen," He said.
