President William Ruto has had several Nicknames since his assumed office in 2022. Kenyans, have often referred to the Head of State as Zakayo, in reference to the Bible's Taxman, over his appetite for taxes.
He has been nicknamed Pharaoh, with Netizens claiming just like Israelites, he has held Kenyans hostage.
President Ruto's current nickname is Kasongo. The name is derived from a song made by a Congolese-Kenyan band.
"Kasongo" was composed by the band Super Mazembe, a congolese band that moved to Kenya in 1974. The band members had gone to visit their friend Kasongo in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
On reaching his house, they met Kasongo’s wife and they asked her if he was at home. Kasongo’s wife welcomed them and told them that she had not seen him for days.
Back then, there was no internet and it was rare to find someone who owned a phone. They decided to send him a message through music, hoping it would reach him.
The Super Mazembe members started creating a song for Kasongo in his living room, telling him to come home because his wife is worried and she’s looking for him but can’t find him. They went on to record the song and, as they say, the rest is history.
The nickname, is in reference to President William Ruto's absence in the lives of those who matter to him.
President Ruto's administration is facing immense criticism for 'overpromising' during campaigns, faces allegations of fraud, shady deals, under delivering and biased tribal nominations. The head of state also faces accusations of not prioritizing service delivery to Kenyans, Nominating unqualified Political cronies as post-election rewards.
President William Ruto however, opines otherwise. Ruto has expressed confidence in his administration's commitment to empowering Kenyans and realization of the Bottom-Up Economic Agenda.
Speaking on December 12, 2024, during the 61st Jamhuri Day Celebrations at Uhuru Park, Nairobi, the president claimed the Kenya-Kwanza administration has already made strides towards lowering the Cost of Living, Providing employment opportunities and better health through Universal Health Coverage.
" When we say that the cost of basic food commodities has come down, it’s a fact, when we say that Kenyans who have registered for Taifa Care are receiving better services than before, it’s a fact." Ruto said.
Ruto, called on his critics to base their opposition on facts, stressing that he has ambitious plans for Kenya’s prosperity.
In a statement, Ruto questioned how critics will respond when tangible results, such as the delivery of affordable housing and the empowerment of thousands of workers across various sectors, become evident.
“What will they say when we begin handing over keys to new affordable housing units or when they see young Kenyans working abroad?” he Quipped.
The head of state, urged Media and Social media users in the East African country to share more positive Stories, insinuating most of the widespread criticism of the Kenya Kwanza Administration is biased.
" In the face of undeniable evidence, skepticism must give way to confidence and we must reject the deceptive embrace of disinformation and fake news. The results and positive impact of our collective pursuit of fundamental economic change can no longer be wished away." He said.
