For most, university graduation is a day of joy and celebration, but for Pendo, it became the stage for a deeply emotional confrontation with her estranged mother.

The young graduate made headlines when she publicly declined a brand-new Mazda CX-5 gifted by her mother, who had abandoned her 15 years ago. The incident unfolded during Pendo’s graduation ceremony at the University of Dar es Salaam, marking an unexpected and dramatic reunion.

Pendo’s mother, absent from her life since she was eight years old, arrived unannounced at the ceremony, carrying the luxury car as a peace offering.

Along with the vehicle, she presented a heartfelt handwritten note explaining her past decisions and expressing regret for leaving Pendo behind.

Born in Dodoma, Pendo was raised by her grandmother after her mother left her to pursue a new relationship in Singida. The man her mother moved in with was unwilling to take responsibility for another man’s child, forcing her to make the heartbreaking decision to leave Pendo behind.
