Former Laikipia Governor Ndiritu Muriithi Sworn In as KRA Chairperson

Nderitu Muriithi was on Monday December 30, 2024, sworn-in as the Chairperson of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in a ceremony presided over by the Registrar in the Office of the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Hon Esther Nyaiyaki at the Supreme Court.

Speaking at his inaugural address, Muriithi pledged to spearhead the tax agency's transformation into a service-oriented organisation, emphasizing that the shift would extend beyond mere branding to encompass all administrative functions, processes, and conduct.

“We shall continue with the journey to transition KRA from an authority to a service-oriented organisation, not just in name but in all administrative functions, processes, procedures, and conduct,” said Muriithi.

The new Chairman outlined plans to leverage technology to streamline tax compliance processes, promising to enhance KRA’s systems to make them more accessible and fit for purpose, enabling seamless interactions between the agency and taxpayers.

" We will leverage technology to a greater extent, to ensure that our systems are fit for purpose, user-friendly and easily accessible; in order to make it more convenient for all taxpayers to comply with their tax obligations." He said.

Muriithi further emphasized the importance of forging strategic partnerships with stakeholders in both the public and private sectors.

"We will also continue to build strategic partnerships with our stakeholders in the public and private sector, to develop sector-specific, responsive solutions and programs for our taxpayers; to collectively boost and build the economy of our country," he added.

Muriithi has extensive experience in leadership and management across various countries, including Kenya, South Africa, Canada, and Australia.

He earned a degree in economics and finance from St. Francis Xavier University in Canada in 1990 and later pursued a master's degree in project management at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Muriithi's political career began with his election as the Member of Parliament for Laikipia West, serving from 2007 to 2013.

During this period, he also held the position of Assistant Minister for Industrialization, where he was involved in reforms to improve the business environment and promote investments.

In 2017, Muriithi was elected as the Governor of Laikipia County as an independent candidate, serving until 2022.

In December 2024, President William Ruto appointed Muriithi as the Chairperson of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Board.

His appointment was part of a series of fresh appointments to state corporations and Kenya’s foreign missions.
