The United States Embassy has announced plans to close its offices on Thursday, January 9.
In a statement dated Wednesday, January 8, the Embassy explained that the closure would be effected in honour of former President Jimmy Carter.
According to the statement, Thursday will be the National Mourning Day to celebrate the life of the former president.
"In observance of the National Day of Mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, the U.S. Embassy will be closed on Thursday, January 9," read the statement in part.
President Carter died on December 29, 2024.
Consequently, President Joe Biden issued various directives on how the country would mourn its former leader.
"I also direct that, for the same length of time, the representatives of the United States in foreign countries shall make similar arrangements for the display of the flag at half‑staff over their embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations," Biden directed.
"I do further appoint January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States. I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance."
