Kirinyaga Residents Set Miraa Pick-up Ablaze along Mwea-Embu Highway

A miraa pickup has been set ablaze by irate residents following a tragic accident along the Mwea-Embu Highway in Kirinyaga County.

The incident occurred after the pickup, reportedly moving at high speed, collided with a bodaboda rider, causing outrage among the locals.

Eyewitnesses claimed the pickup driver was driving recklessly, leading to the unfortunate crash.

The accident left the bodaboda rider severely injured, sparking anger and frustration among nearby residents, who quickly gathered at the scene.

Their emotions boiled over as they demanded justice for what they described as negligence.

In a fit of rage, the residents set the pickup on fire, expressing their dissatisfaction with reckless driving, which they say has become a menace along the busy highway.

Some voiced concerns over the safety of road users, urging drivers to exercise more caution and respect for other motorists.

Local authorities, including police officers, arrived at the scene to calm the situation and restore order.

Investigations into the incident have been launched to establish the exact circumstances leading to the accident.

This is not the First such incident, Last Week, Two people tragically lost their lives in an accident involving a miraa-laden pick-up van at Kwa Toma area along the Kitui-Kibwezi road.

According to Kyambati King'ondu, the senior chief for Kyatune in Ikanga Division, Kitui South Subcounty, he was alerted about the incident at 7 am.

"I rushed to the scene and found that a miraa pick-up had knocked down two people, who died on the spot," Chief King'ondu stated.

The victims were identified as a bodaboda rider and a pedestrian walking along the road.

The accident reportedly occurred when the speeding pick-up collided with the rider, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and hit the pedestrian on the sidewalk.

The vehicle came to a halt several meters into the bush after spilling part of its miraa cargo.

Traffic police arrived later to examine the scene and transported the bodies to the morgue.

Chief King'ondu urged road users, including both motorists and pedestrians, to exercise caution to reduce the increasing number of accidents along the road.

"People walking or conducting business near roads should remain vigilant and alert, as vehicles can lose control unexpectedly," he advised.

Meanwhile, calls for enhanced traffic enforcement and road safety awareness campaigns in the area have grown louder.
