KENYA : Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now claims that Members Of Parliament (MPs) and Senators were bribed by the head of state to support his ouster from office.
Mr. Rigathi, Speaking on Tuesday, January 4, 2025, alleged that his Impeachment on alleged grounds of Tribalism and Corruption was an ill, personal, political move, orchestrated by his former boss, President William Ruto.
Expressing regret for supporting President Ruto, campaigning for the Kenya-Kwanza government and seeing to it Ruto rose to the top-seat, Gachagua claimed it was unfortunate the President went to an extend of offering cash tokens to legislators for his ouster.
According to Gachagua, Members Of Parliament (MPs) in the National Assembly who Supported his Impeachment, received Ksh 500,000 each from the President.
Following his impeachment in Parliament, Gachagua proceeded to the Senate, which upheld his Ouster. The Former Dp, claimed President Ruto offered each senator Ksh 10 Million each, to support the motion.
Gachagua described Ruto as a fierce leader, saying only a few can stand up to him. He further alleged that that President Ruto offered him sh 2 billion to resign and avoid being impeached, so he could run in the 2027 elections.
“The President told me, 'just resign, and I will give you two billion shillings so you can go home, rest, do your own things, have security, receive a salary, and you can run again for office in the future,” said Gachagua.
The Former Dp, said he turned down the President's Offer, stating he was not willing to listen to someone who was plotting against him.
“I asked myself, can someone who is plotting against you offer you a solution on how to live? If you see someone planning bad things for you, the path they tell you to take is the one you should avoid,” he said.
At the same time, Gachagua said he is not a self-centered person who is interested in running for office, insisting that the impeachment is not a death-sentence for his political career.
"The idea that if I am removed, I won't run for office again means nothing to me. You know, people think I am someone who is overly self-centered, but it's not necessary for me to hold any position in the Republic of Kenya,” Gachagua added.
The Former Deputy President attributed his impeachment woes to his inability to shield the government from criticism over controversial Adani deals and the Social Health Authority, SHA.
Speaking during an Interview with local Stations, Gachagua clarified that he did not want to associate himself with projects marred with controversies and graft claims.
Gachagua's impeachment motion, was introduced on Tuesday 1st October 2024 at the National Assembly, citing 11 grounds for the DP's removal, including gross violation of the Constitution, misconduct, and violations of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, as well as the Leadership and Integrity Act.
The Motion, Filed by Kibwezi West Mp Mwenge Mutuse, had received the support of 291 MPs, who had appended their Signature's for it's presentation.
With a Majority of Members of Parliament Supporting his ouster days later, the Former Dp's Impeachment was forwarded to the Senate. Senators Concurred with MPs and a Majority voted in Support of his Ouster, making him the First Deputy President Under Kenya's new Constitution to get impeached.
President William Ruto then Nominated Former Interior Cs Prof. Kithure Kindiki, who was approved by the Parliament and sworn in to replace Rigathi Gachagua as Kenya's Deputy President.
