Nairobi, April 21: Tributes are pouring as the world mourns the death of Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88 after a long battle with illness.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the pontiff’s passing at 9:45 a.m. from Casa Santa Marta.
"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father," Cardinal Farrell said in a televised statement.
“His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God." He added.
The news of the Pope's death triggered a wave of condolences and heartfelt tributes from across the world, as many described him as a beacon of hope, peace and humility.
Some Kenyans on Social Media, albeit indifferent and re-known for finding a way to cope through such devastating news, could not help it, taking to different social platforms to propose Raila Odinga should replace the Pope.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has often been the subject of 'bizarre memes" over the years, over his ability to navigate different political turbulence, forging 'coalitions with his 'rivals in successive governments.
His numerous bids at the Presidency, coming closer to clinching power-yet not close enough-coupled with his failed African Union Chairperson bid recently, have seen Netizens 'jibe the ODM Party leader to consider seeking elective posts in other countries.
Kenyans reacted to Raila's 'Endorsement' for Pope differently, with some claiming the former PM will lose, others saying he will carry the day and some laughing the joke off.
" Hii Tunachukua Asubuhi Mapema... Baba anaeza simama Kiti ya Pope atandikwe na Muslim vibaya sana... Raila takes an early lead... Mzee4Pope hata Papa wa Roma,Wetah amemuendorse, Unlike AU, hii nayo mzee atapata victory mapema... Journey to Canaan will be closer and faster.. Mko na Ujinga... Here we go" just to name a few responses.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto has led the country in mourning the Pope, terming his demise a blow not only to the religious fraternity but the world at large.
“We join the Catholic Church and the global Christian community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. This is a big loss to the Catholic faithful and the Christian world. Pope Francis will be remembered for a life dedicated to serving the Lord, the Church, and humanity,” said Ruto.
The head of State lauded the Pontiff’s leadership style, compassion for the poor and his ethics, implying a religious leader who transformed Millions of lives.
“He exemplified servant leadership through his humility, his unwavering commitment to inclusivity and justice, and his deep compassion for the poor and the vulnerable. His strong ethical and moral convictions inspired millions across the world, regardless of faith or background. May his soul Rest in Eternal Peace.” he added.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on the other hand had this to say "The Holy Father has left a big gap in the Church and the world. His contribution to Catholicism remains strong. My deepest sympathies to the Catholic faithful in Kenya and the world."
"We will remember him strongly as one of the Popes who visited Kenya during his Papacy and prayed for our nation often. May Papa Francis rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon him.” he added.
Revered for his humility, progressive leadership, and tireless advocacy for social justice, Pope Francis made a lasting impression around the world, including in Kenya.
