A Meru-bound Tahmeed bus from Mombasa intercepted with Explosives

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has impounded a Meru-bound passenger bus from Mombasa with explosives during a routine security operation along the Kanyonyoo–Embu Highway, leading to the arrest of five suspects.

The multi-agency security team, conducting a routine patrol, intercepted the bus and discovered a medium-sized white carton branded with the LATO Milk logo.

Upon further inspection, authorities uncovered ten water gel explosives labelled EXPLOGEL V6, one detonating cord and two IDEAL Electric Detonators.

Detectives said they immediately escorted the bus to Kanyonyo Police Station, where the driver, Lawrance Kioko Mutuku, and the conductor, Said Rashid Amour, were arrested and taken into custody.

Following forensic leads, detectives from the Anti-Terrorist Police Unit (ATPU) and the Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) traced the explosives' origin to Brenda Imboyanga Makhulungu, who had declared them “Dawa ya Maji” at the Tahmeed office in Kakamega.

According to DCI, Brenda, the registered sender, had orchestrated the journey of the explosives from Kakamega to Mombasa, and later to the Meru-bound bus via Kitui.

“Brenda was apprehended in Mundutsu village, Kakamega County,” DCI said.

It added that the investigation continued to unfold, resulting in the arrest of two additional suspects, David Tindi Andala and John Kariuki Kung’u, who were detained in Meru town.

All five suspects are now in custody as the investigation continues. The bus and the explosives have been seized as evidence.
