Just days after Isiolo General and Referral Hospital received Sh27.6 million worth of medical drugs and supplies from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA), Members of the County Assembly, led by Health Committee Chairperson Salesio Kiambi, raised serious concerns over gaps in essential hospital services during an impromptu visit.
The MCAs said the delivery should benefit residents, but noted that critical areas still face major challenges.
Cherab MCA Halima Abgudo pointed out that key services such as the mortuary, dialysis units, and ambulances are poorly managed, while immunisation and tetanus injection services urgently need improvement.
Oldonyiro MCA David Lemantile questioned whether the consignment would reach ward dispensaries or remain only at the hospital, seeking details on the types of medicines delivered.
During the visit, Nominated MCA Dekha Bonja sought clarification on ambulance functionality, asking how many vehicles were operational.
Burat Ward MCA Nicholas Lorot raised staffing issues, highlighting delays in promotions and gaps in specialised job groupings that affect service delivery.
Nominated MCA Nura Diba requested to see the official delivery note for the consignment and suggested a counter-check.
He also inquired about polio vaccination, the operational status of the Beyond Zero van, and raised concerns over slaughter facilities that lack public health officers to certify meat.
MCAs also stressed the absence of pharmacists, emphasising that qualified personnel are essential to ensure medicines are dispensed safely and patients receive proper care.
In response, Hospital Administrator Adan Boru confirmed that the consignment was for Isiolo Referral Hospital only and said measures are being taken to address the highlighted gaps.
He requested the Assembly’s support in conducting civic education on the newly established Social Health Authority (SHA) to help residents understand and benefit from its services.
Present during the visit were County Medical Director Dr. Kivuva, the hospital management team, and the Director and Deputy Director of Public Health, who engaged with the MCAs on the issues raised.
The County Assembly reiterated its commitment to oversight, transparency, and ensuring that all residents have access to quality healthcare under the fully devolved health function outlined in the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution.
