KENYA : A Machakos County Assembly bonding retreat in Malindi, Kilifi County, took a unexpected twist after two Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) clashed following an alternation over a nominated colleague.
The incident, which took place at a popular coastal resort, has raised questions and concern about the conduct of elected leaders in the country.
Speaking to JULISHA, a source present revealed that tension began when the two male MCAs- identified as Kyevuo and Mwangangi - engaged in a heated exchange, over Purity, a nominated female MCA.
Witnesses revealed that one of the men had openly declared interest in Purity but was enraged after discovering her close relationship with the other.
Fellow legislators were forced to intervene and separate the two as blows started to fly in a love interest affair turned sour.
"The environment became extremely tense, some MCAs even contemplated walking out of the retreat, it was only after the intervention of the Assembly leadership that calm was restored", the source revealed.
The retreat, was organized by the County Assembly of Machakos, in a bid to promote Unity, better working relationships and collaboration among the legislators.
However, the altercation did exactly the opposite, as it overshadowed the intended purpose, attracting public criticism. Fellow MCAs have also expressed concern.
According to Machakos MCAs, the conduct of the trio, was not only unprofessional but damaging to the public image of the Assembly.
There are now growing calls for displinary action to be taken against the involved parties with the Machakos County Assembly reportedly reviewing the incident.
An MCA who spoke to JULISHA.CO.KE stated that it's unfortunate that Legislators are letting emotions and personal love lives take precedent of service delivery to the citizenry.
" This is now what we expect from honorable members, they have embarrassed us, " he added, urging fellow lawmakers to conduct themselves in a disciplined, respectable manner.
