AU Mission Launches Counter-Explosives Training for Jubaland Security Forces

The African Union’s stabilization mission in Somalia, AUSSOM, began a specialized counter-explosives training program for regional security forces in Kismayo on Wednesday, as part of a broader strategy to transition security responsibilities to local troops.

The week-long course focuses on route searching and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) for the Jubaland Security Forces (JSF).

Conducted in partnership with the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the initiative aims to strengthen counter-IED capabilities and improve operational safety for forces on the ground.

According to a statement posted on social media, the training is designed to empower Somali forces to take the lead in securing the Jubaland region.

Opening the course on behalf of Sector 2 Commander Brig. Edward Banda, Lt. Col. Galgalo Liban emphasized that the program is a critical step in supporting Somalia’s transition to Somali-led security operations.

The training is being delivered by AUSSOM EOD specialists from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). The initial group consists of 16 JSF personnel, with three additional cohorts scheduled to follow in the coming weeks.

Col. Bashir Guhaad, the Operations Officer for the Jubaland Darawish Forces, reaffirmed the regional force's commitment to security and thanked AUSSOM and UNMAS for their support. He noted that the training promotes "Somali-owned solutions" intended to enhance freedom of movement and ensure long-term stability in the region.
