The race to secure a spot in the country's top-tier technical institutions is officially on. Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened the application portal for TVETs, polytechnics and colleges intake, offering a critical pathway for thousands of young Kenyans to enter the skilled labor market.
KUCCPS announced that the application window for the September 2026 TVET and colleges intake is open, inviting candidates who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 2025 and previous years —to submit their course choices.
For many, this announcement is more than just a calendar event; it is the "So What" moment in their career trajectory. With youth unemployment remaining a primary policy challenge, the shift towards competence-based technical training is not merely an alternative to university education—it is increasingly being framed as a faster, more direct route to economic self-sufficiency.
As the government continues to modernize infrastructure across national polytechnics and technical training institutes (TTIs), these institutions are evolving into the bedrock of Kenya's industrialization goals.
Navigating the Path to Enrollment
The application process is entirely digital, reflecting the government's push for efficient, paperless service delivery. Candidates are required to log into the official KUCCPS student portal at https://kuccps.net/login
Candidates will then be required to enter their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) index number, KCSE year, and password.
Applicants have been encouraged to use their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) index number or birth certificate number as their password.
Once in the portal, students will access all the programmes, the institutions where they are being offered and requirements.
The placement agency has emphasized that inclusivity remains a priority, with options available for students across the entire spectrum of KCSE grades.
Key steps for prospective applicants include:
Verify Eligibility: Check the specific entry requirements for courses offered in National Polytechnics, Technical Training Institutes, Institutes of Science and Technology and Teacher colleges.
Explore the Portal: Use the portal to browse programmes that align with personal career goals, ranging from engineering and ICT to hospitality and building technology.
Submit Choices: Finalize selections before the strict deadline of May 6.
Monitor Placement: Keep track of the application status through the portal after the deadline of applications.
Middle-level colleges have a capacity of 1,132,531 for this year’s placement to diplomas, certificates, artisans, and other TVET levels. Secondary Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) have a capacity of 2,480. Applicants seeking TVET courses can apply with any KCSE grade, provided they sat their exams between 2000 and 2025.
KUCCPS confirmed that in the 2025 KCSE cohort, 711,744 students who scored between77 C plain and E are qualified for placement to public colleges and other TVET institutions. The portal is live and will be open until Wednesday, 6 May 2026.
This intake arrives alongside significant policy reforms within the Ministry of Education. Effective May 2026, the government has moved toward a standardized annual fee structure of Sh67,189 for all TVET programmes nationwide. This policy aims to remove the uncertainty of fluctuating costs, making technical education more predictable and accessible for households planning their finances.
