National Carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) has deployed its Boeing 777-300ER on the Nairobi-London Heathrow route, boosting passenger and cargo capacity, marking a critical milestone in the state-backed airline’s broader structural recovery plan.
The aircraft returned to commercial operations on Friday, July 17, 2026, after undergoing operational preparations that included training exercises for flight crews. Before its deployment on the London route, the aircraft was used on domestic flights in the Nairobi-Mombasa corridor, a temporary routing utilised by the flag carrier to test ground infrastructure, operational logistics, and crew integration.
With a capacity of about 400 passengers, the Boeing 777-300ER is expected to significantly increase seating availability on the London route, which operates daily flights between Nairobi and the United Kingdom. The service is among Kenya Airways’ busiest long-haul routes, serving both business and leisure travellers.
KQ Acting Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Captain George Kamal, said deploying the Boeing 777-300ER on the London route formed part of the airline's fleet optimisation strategy.
"This is more than the introduction of an aircraft. It reflects our continued commitment to building a stronger, more competitive and future-ready airline while connecting Africa to the world through reliable, efficient and world-class operations," Kamal said.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, who attended the aircraft’s launch at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, said the aircraft's return would improve the airline's ability to connect Kenya to international markets while providing additional cargo capacity for key export sectors.
"The aircraft immediately strengthens our operations on the Nairobi-London Heathrow route, expands passenger and cargo capacity, and enhances our ability to connect Kenya to global markets," Chirchir said.
He said the increased cargo capacity would provide exporters, particularly in the horticulture, fresh produce, fisheries and manufacturing sectors, with more reliable access to international markets, creating jobs, supporting businesses and driving economic growth.
Chirchir added the government was complementing the fleet expansion by accelerating the modernisation of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) through upgraded airfield infrastructure, expanded terminals, modern baggage and security systems, and increased aircraft parking capacity.
According to the CS, the expansion is expected to increase JKIA's annual passenger handling capacity from 7.5 million to approximately 22 million, reinforcing Nairobi's position as the preferred aviation gateway to East and Central Africa.
"We remain committed to strengthening KQ through strategic reforms, a stronger balance sheet, the pursuit of a strategic investor, and policies that will ensure the airline remains commercially sustainable, competitive and profitable," Chirchir said.
He added that the government's investment in aviation infrastructure and the national carrier was aimed at supporting trade, tourism, investment and regional integration.
"Kenya is open for business. We are investing in world-class aviation infrastructure, strengthening our national carrier, and building a transport ecosystem that powers trade, tourism, investment and regional integration," he said.
The Aircraft’s return expands Kenya Airways’ wide-body fleet, which is currently largely made up of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. While the Dreamliners can accommodate about 234 passengers, the larger 777-300ER offers substantially more room for both travellers and cargo.
The Boeing 777-300ER is among the largest aircraft used in commercial aviation, measuring nearly 74 metres in length with a wingspan of almost 65 metres. Its size and range make it suitable for high-demand international routes where airlines require greater passenger and freight capacity.
Kenya Airways’ decision to return the aircraft to service comes as the national carrier seeks to strengthen its long-haul operations and improve its role as a key connection point between Africa and global markets.
The flagship asset returned to Nairobi earlier this year following nearly a decade of international service on lease to Turkish Airlines, rejoining the fleet at a time when global aviation continues to face unprecedented equipment shortages and supply chain constraints.
