Chelsea have extended their Winning Streak in the English Premier League, striking Five Goals at St Mary's Stadium, with an outpaced Southampton pulling just one back.
Chelsea is enjoying the benefits of the positive run of form currently being shown by Enzo Fernandez as the Argentina star provided another assist for the Blues’ opening goal against Southampton.
The opening phase of the 2024/25 campaign has been very positive for Enzo Maresca’s side as the London club came into their Premier League clash with Southampton on Wednesday night third in the standings, while the English giants are also top of the UEFA Europa Conference League table.
Heading into Chelsea’s clash with Southampton on Wednesday, Fernandez was on a run of contributing to goals across the London outfit’s last three Premier League games against Arsenal, Leicester and Aston Villa.
The Argentina star produced two goals and two assists within those three clashes and the midfielder continued his run against Southampton.
The 23-year-old swung in a corner for Axel Disasi to latch onto, which gave Enzo Maresca’s team a 1-0 lead over the Saints.
Fernandes has made it four games in a row when it comes to contributing to goals.
Chelsea’s second goal came thanks to Southampton’s insistence on playing out from the ball. An errant pass from goalkeeper Joe Lumley gave the ball back to Chelsea, with Christopher Nkunku putting the ball in the empty net.
Southampton have now made nine errors leading to goals in the Premier League this season, the most of any club in Europe’s top five leagues. In the Premier League alone, they have four more errors than any other club.
If that doesn’t sum up Southampton’s season, how about this? Southampton are the first side on record to complete as many as 91.9% of their passes in the first half of a Premier League game and concede three goals. Maybe it’s time for a change of tactics.
Chelsea were in cruise control when Southampton went down to 10 men after Jack Stephens was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair. Noni Madueke picked the ball up out on the right, cut inside and curled one into the bottom far corner to make it three.
Chelsea added the fourth goal in the second half from Cole Palmer, who has shown ultimate class for the blues since last season.
Jadon Sancho, a signing from Manchester united, scored his debut goal for the London team in EPL, to make it Five for Chelsea.
