72 injured in Gusii Stadium amid Shabana - Gor Mahia chaos

72 injured in Gusii Stadium amid Shabana - Gor Mahia chaos

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has condemned the violence and chaos that erupted at Gusii Stadium on Sunday during the FKF Premier League clash between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia, which resulted in a stampede.

The incident occurred just before the highly anticipated 2 p.m. kickoff between Gor Mahia and Shabana FC, who were placed third and fourth respectively, in the FKF Premier League standings.

Footages show violence breaking out in the stands and spilling onto the pitch, with rival fans hurling stones and other objects at each other.

Police officers eventually arrived at the scene and managed to restore order. Despite the chaos, the match went ahead after a one-hour delay.

In a statement released Sunday evening, FKF expressed deep concern over the incident, saying it undermines the progress made in improving safety standards at local football matches.

“FKF strongly condemns all forms of violence or hooliganism in our stadiums. Football must remain a sport that brings people together, not one that puts lives at risk. The safety and well-being of fans, players and officials remains a top priority for the Federation,” the statement read.

The federation also dismissed reports that a fan had died during the incident, clarifying that 72 individuals were injured and are receiving treatment at various hospitals.

“We have received confirmed reports from Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital, RAM Hospital, Hema Hospital, Christamarianne Hospital and the police, indicating that a total of 72 individuals were treated for injuries,” FKF said.

As of this evening, no fatalities have been reported.

FKF further assured the public of its commitment to investigating the matter and taking action against those responsible.

“We are working closely with relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest. Decisive disciplinary action will be taken upon conclusion of ongoing investigations.”
