African Nations Championship co-hosts, Tanzania, extended their fine run in the campaign when they took on Mauritania in their second Group B outing on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.
Mauritania entered the match desperate for a first victory after a goalless draw against Madagascar, while Tanzania's Taifa Stars rode on the momentum of a solid 2-0 opening win over Burkina Faso.
Kapombe left it late but made it count as his 89th-minute goal handed hosts Tanzania a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mauritania to cement their top position in Group B of the ongoing CHAN tournament.
The Taifa Stars dominated proceedings from the onset, thrilling the home crowd with relentless pressure and attacking flair. However, Mauritania proved to be a tough nut to crack, with their disciplined defensive setup frustrating every Tanzanian effort to break the deadlock.
Despite creating several chances throughout the match, the breakthrough proved elusive for the hosts as Mauritania’s backline held firm. The game looked destined for a goalless draw until the dying minutes when the pressure finally paid off.
In the 89th minute, midfielder Iddy Nado picked out clinical defender Kapombe with a clever ball into the box. Kapombe, timing his run perfectly, coolly slotted home past the Mauritanian goalkeeper, sending the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium into wild celebration.
Kapombe’s last-gasp heroics capped a dramatic night for the hosts, who now shift focus to the next stage with confidence and belief.

The victory takes the CHAN 2024 co-hosts to six points having registered a 2-0 win in the opener over Burkina Faso last Saturday.
It goes without saying therefore that Tanzania is now top of group B with the maximum 6 points.
Burkina Faso who won 4-2 over Central African Republic on Wednesday closely follow with three points.
Mauritania has a point and so is Madagascar with Central African Republic yet to get any point.
Against Central African Republic, Burkina Faso scored through Papus Ouattara, Abdoul Abass Guiro, Patrick Malo and Abdoul Baguian as they won convincingly 4-2 over Central African Republic (CAR).
Sydney Tchibinda and Ange Zoumara got the two goals for CAR.
On 9th August 2025; Central African Republic will face Mauritania in the early kick off before Tanzania will come up against Madagascar to fight for the slot to the knock-out round.
