Kenya’s national women’s volleyball team, the Malkia Strikers, have raised the alarm over unpaid allowances just hours before their opening match at the World Championships in Phuket, Thailand.

The team, who face Germany in its first fixture on Saturday, say they have been forced to focus on national duty while grappling with financial uncertainty at home.

Despite promises from government officials and federation leaders, the players say they are yet to receive allowances dating back to their training camp at Nyayo Stadium, as well as their preparation periods in Vietnam and Thailand.

“We are tired of the fake promises. Who is holding our money as Malkia Strikers, and when are we getting our allowances?” the players said in a video shared by sports journalist Carol Radull.

The players further revealed that their sponsor, Mozzart Bet, stepped in to cover some costs, including accommodation and training kits, after the federation cited a lack of funds for a residential camp.

“If it was not for them, we wouldn’t be having the uniforms, the training shirts, or even camp,” the team added.

In the emotional 12-minute video, they appealed directly to President William Ruto: “We are also your children. Motivate us. The CS promised us that our money would come. We are suffering, and that’s why we are making this kind of video.”

The Malkia Strikers, who have consistently brought pride to Kenya with strong performances on the international stage, say their only wish now is to be given what they are owed so they can focus on the task ahead.
