President William Ruto has praised the Harambee Stars for their spirited performance at the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), saying the team has inspired the nation despite bowing out at the quarter-final stage.
In a statement released on Saturday, President Ruto lauded the national team for showing resilience, courage and unity in their debut appearance at the tournament, which Kenya is co-hosting with Tanzania and Uganda under the banner of Pamoja CHAN.
“We had a remarkable run. The Harambee Stars have silenced doubters, lifted the spirit of a nation and reminded us that when Kenyans play with courage, confidence and determination, nothing is impossible,” the President said.
Kenya’s campaign ended in heartbreak on Friday after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Madagascar at Kasarani Stadium. The match had ended 1-1 after extra time, before the Stars fell short in the lottery of spot-kicks.
President Ruto noted that while the loss was painful, there was no dishonour in the manner of Kenya’s exit. “Yes, we bowed out at the quarter-finals, but we fought valiantly to the very end. To lose in the lottery of penalties is no dishonour; to push the contest to such a finish is itself a badge of greatness,” he stated.
The Head of State also congratulated Madagascar on their victory while emphasizing that the Harambee Stars’ run had given Kenyans joy and renewed hope. “Every Kenyan is proud of you. You have united the country, given us moments of joy and lifted our hopes,” he said.
Looking ahead, the President urged Kenyans to continue rallying behind the team as it prepares for future tournaments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations which Kenya will co-host. “For our boys, the journey does not end here. Kenya shall rise. Kenya shall triumph,” he affirmed.
