Football fans in Uganda will attend the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 third-place playoff at Namboole Stadium free of charge after the Local Organizing Committee announced that it had purchased all available tickets.
The playoff, set for Friday evening, will see Sudan face Senegal as part of the closing programme of Uganda’s co-hosting duties.
The CHAN 2024 tournament has been jointly staged by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with Tanzania hosting the opening fixture, Uganda staging the third place match, and Kenya set to host the final in Nairobi on Saturday.
Dr Dennis Mugimba, chairperson of the communications and signage subcommittee, said the decision to offer tickets free of charge was a gesture of gratitude to supporters.
“This is the way the LOC led by Maama Janet Museveni is saying thank you to all football fans that have made our homeland proud during this historic experience,” he said.
Fans can access their tickets exclusively through CAF’s official website by entering a special promotional code. Each supporter is entitled to a maximum of three tickets, which will be clearly marked “Not For Sale” but will retain all security features of official matchday passes.
Those without authentic tickets will not be admitted to the stadium.
Entertainment will complement the football. Ugandan musicians, including Jose Chameleone, John Blaq, Elijah Kitaka and Vinka will perform before kick-off, which is scheduled for 6pm, and after the medal ceremony.
The committee stressed that the same security rules and restrictions that have applied throughout the tournament will remain in force.
Uganda’s free ticket gesture closes its contribution to the tournament, which marks the first time the competition has been jointly hosted by three nations.
