President Ruto welcomes EPL trophy, backs Arsenal for title glory

The English Premier League (EPL) trophy has officially arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, ahead of the Guinness Matchday Experience, offering football fans a rare opportunity to view one of the most prestigious prizes in world football.

Crafted by Asprey London from sterling silver and adorned with a 24-carat gilt crown, the EPL trophy last visited Kenya in 2023. Its first stop today was State House, Nairobi, where it was received by President William Ruto.

Just as during the UEFA Champions League Trophy Tour in Kenya earlier this year, the Head of State, an ardent supporter of the North London club, used the occasion to back his team, Arsenal, to win the title despite their more than decade-long drought.

Arsenal last won the Premier League trophy in 2004.

“As many of you know, I am a proud Arsenal fan. The last two decades have not been easy for us, but if you’ve been watching lately, the style, the swagger, the spirit, it’s all coming alive again,” President Ruto said. “To our friends in the EPL and across Europe, watch out, Arsenal is back.”

The President also paid tribute to the late Raila Odinga, noting that the former Prime Minister shared his passion for Arsenal.

“We lost one of our big Arsenal fans, the late Raila Odinga. Whenever we were not discussing national matters, we often talked about how our team was performing,” Ruto said.

He added that while football results may vary, the sport remains a unifying force across communities and generations.

The arrival of the trophy marks the beginning of a two-day public showcase hosted by Guinness, the official beer partner of the Premier League.

Fans will have the opportunity to view and take photos with the trophy at Bar Next Door (BND) along Kiambu Road on October 25 and 26.

According to Guinness Brand Manager Joy Murugi, the event is part of the brand’s continued effort to connect fans to the global game through premium football experiences.

“We remain committed to offering our consumers world-class football experiences. Hosting the Premier League trophy in Nairobi recognises Kenya’s passionate football community and their strong support for the league,” Murugi said.

To participate in the Guinness Matchday Contest, fans must purchase a six-pack of Guinness Smooth or Guinness Foreign Extra Stout.

Each purchase earns three tickets to the trophy viewing experience, which will also feature live match screenings and football analysis sessions.

Kenya ranks among the top Premier League markets in Africa, with recent surveys showing that more than 80 per cent of local football fans follow the competition closely.
