Kenya Sevens rugby team, Shujaa, maintained their perfect run at the 2026 HSBC SVNS2 tournament in Nairobi following a second straight big win at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.
Having thrashed Canada 29-12 in their opening match in the morning, Shujaa took it a notch higher as they moved top of the table following a 33-0 demotion of Belgium in the afternoon.
Kenya took little time to make their presence felt as the gulf in class was evident from a Shujaa team that was forced out of the top flight against a Belgian side that was recently promoted from the third tier.
Just two minutes into the clash, Shujaa were already ahead. Assistant captain Samuel Asati capitalized on a scrum-half opportunity just meters from the Belgian try line, calmly dotting down. Nygel Amaitsa slotted in the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
Chrisant Ojwang had the second with great sprint from Shujaa’s 22-yard box to touch down at the other end, the try converted for 14-0 in favour of Kevin Wambua’s men.
Kenya remained relentless as halftime approached. Asati turned provider, offloading to Kevin Wekesa who finished clinically to extend the lead.
It is never complete for Shujaa if Patrick Odongo does not add his magic and the Daystar Falcons star excited the crowd. Odongo showed his quality with a darting run in between his markers for Kenya’s fourth try which was also converted for 26-0 at halftime.
The second half was more measured, with Belgium pressing to get on the scoreboard but squandering their chances.
Their missed opportunities proved costly as substitute Floyd Wabwire added to Kenya’s tally after coming on for Odongo. David Nyangige, making his debut, calmly converted to wrap up a polished performance.
Belgium struggled to gain momentum throughout the match, repeatedly contained by Kenya’s organized defence and quick transitions.
The result marked Shujaa’s second consecutive win of the tournament, reinforcing their intent to push for promotion to the top-tier SVNS World Championship. Next they face Germany on Saturday at 1654hrs EAT.
