Manchester City’s hopes of even reaching the Champions League quarterfinals lie in tatters after they fell to an embarrassing 3–0 defeat in the first leg of their last 16 tie with Real Madrid.
This eagerly-anticipated fixture was the first in the competition's history to be played in the knockout stages in five consecutive campaigns.
Seeking to win a record-extending 16th European crown this season, Real Madrid were forced into the Champions League knockout round playoffs after finishing ninth in the League Phase, one place and one point behind Man City after losing three of their final five fixtures.
Man City were considered favorites for their journey to the Santiago Bernabéu but any chance of progressing hangs by a thread after 90 minutes of 180. Captain Federico Valverde single-handedly downed Pep Guardiola’s men, the Uruguayan’s exceptional hat-trick leaving the Cityzens on the brink.
Valverde's first came after being released by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, with the Uruguay international managing to round the onrushing Gianluigi Donnarumma before finding the back of the net to spark jubilant scenes inside the stadium.
Real Madrid's captain made the breakthrough in the 20th minute, before finding the back of the net for a second time in the 27th minute.
Valverde again produced another excellent finish to score his second, registering after being released by Vinicius Junior.
The skipper was at it again just before the half-time break, lifting the ball over the challenge of Man City's Marc Guehi inside the penalty box before firing into the bottom corner for 3-0.
The midfielder has now scored his first-ever hat-trick in the Champions League on his 76th appearance in the competition, while it is his first-ever treble for Real Madrid in all.
Things appeared set to worsen for City just before the hour mark as Gianluigi Donnarumma gifted Madrid a penalty, but the goalkeeper saved the subsequent spot kick to spare his side’s blushes. It did little to reinvigorate the visitors, however, who were unable to muster any response in the closing stages.
Real Madrid needed one of their attack-minded players to step forward in the absence of Mbappe, Bellingham and also Rodrygo, and Valverde has made his mark.
A horrendous defeat means City are now face with overturning a three-goal deficit in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium—something only achieved on four occasions during the knockout phase in the Champions League era.
