The Premier League title race is down to fine margins, and Manchester City know it. Pep Guardiola’s men welcome Brentford to the Etihad Stadium this weekend knowing anything less than three points could hand Arsenal the initiative.
City sit second on 71 points, five behind leaders Arsenal with a game in hand. With the gunners currently leading the league standings, every remaining fixture now carries enormous significance for City. Dropped points at this stage could seriously damage their hopes of retaining the Premier League crown, making the meeting against Brentford one of the most important matches of their run.
Monday’s dramatic 3-3 draw at Everton, left Guardiola admitting “the title race is now solely in Arsenal’s hands”. Arsenal face West Ham on Sunday. If City lose to Brentford and the Gunners win, the gap stretches to eight with only three games left for City.
City’s home form is their safety net: unbeaten in their last 15 Premier League matches at the Etihad and boasting a record of 12W-3D-1L this season. They’ve also dominated Brentford recently, winning both meetings this season — 1-0 in the league in October and 2-0 in the Carabao Cup in December — and are unbeaten in six against the Bees since May 2023.
Don’t expect Brentford to roll over. Keith Andrews’ side are 7th on 51 points, one point behind 6th-place Bournemouth, and still chasing Europe. Sixth could mean Champions League if Aston Villa win the Europa League final on May 20 and finish 5th. The Bees snapped a six-game winless run with a 3-0 win over West Ham last weekend, though that scoreline “flattered them”.
Their away record is shaky: 9 losses in 17 on the road this season. But they stunned City 2-1 at the Etihad in November 2022 and have made a habit of frustrating big sides.
City’s puzzle is control. Brentford are “draw-happy" with three draws in their last five, built on a 3-5-2 that presses high then drops into a low block. Guardiola will lean on Rodri’s security, Phil Foden between the lines, and Erling Haaland hunting goal 26. Haaland has scored in four of his last five and leads the Golden Boot race, but Brentford’s Igor Thiago is only three behind on 22 after his hat-trick vs West Ham. For Brentford, Thiago’s hold-up play and the diagonal runs of Reiss Nelson will target City’s centre-backs.
Historically, City have dominated this fixture overall, but recent meetings have often been competitive and tactically fascinating. Guardiola himself has repeatedly praised Brentford as one of the league’s most difficult teams to prepare against due to their flexibility and physical intensity.
The significance of the match extends beyond just three points. Manchester City know Arsenal’s consistency leaves little room for error. Any slip-up could hand the advantage firmly to the league leaders in what is becoming another tense Premier League title race. Brentford, meanwhile, have the opportunity to strengthen their own push for a potential European place.
Team News
Man City have been boosted by the news that Josko Gvardiol has returned to training after more than three months out with a tibial fracture, and the defender could be ready to feature in the matchday squad this weekend.
Ruben Dias (ankle) is also nearing a return, but is seemingly unlikely to play against Brentford, while a late call will be made on the availability of Rodri, who returned to partial team training on Friday having missed the last three matches with a groin issue.
Guardiola is not expected to make too many changes, if any, to his starting lineup, but one potential alteration could see Rayan Ait-Nouri return at left-back and Nico O’Reilly move into midfield at the expense of Nico Gonzalez. Mateo Kovacic may also be ready to start after recovering from injury.
Erling Haaland has scored four goals in his previous six games against Brentford and he is expected to be joined in attack by Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki and Doku, the latter has been involved in six goals across his last five appearances in all competitions (four goals, two assists).
As for Brentford, Antoni Milambo, Fabio Carvalho (both knee) and Rico Henry (thigh) remain unavailable for selection, but Jordan Henderson is fit to feature and has trained following a period of absence with an unspecified problem.
Andrews is also unlikely to shake up his starting lineup too much, but Kevin Schade could be in danger of making way having failed to score in each of his last eight appearances. Should the winger make way, Keane Lewis-Potter could be moved into an attacking role, allowing either Henry - if fit - or Aaron Hickey to return at left-back.
Igor Thiago netted his 22nd PL goal of the season last weekend and is just three goals behind Haaland in the Golden Boot race. The Brazilian striker will be looking to end a three-game goal drought away from home this weekend, while Mathias Jensen, Yehor Yarmolyuk and Mikkel Damsgaard are all set to continue in midfield, despite the return to fitness of Vitaly Janelt and Josh Dasilva.
Manchester City possible starting lineup: Donnarumma; Nunes, Khusanov, Guehi, O’Reilly; Gonzalez, Bernardo; Semenyo, Cherki, Doku; Haaland
Brentford possible starting lineup: Kelleher; Kayode, Van den Berg, Collins, Hickey; Jensen, Yarmolyuk; Ouattara, Damsgaard, Lewis-Potter; Thiago
