Gor Mahia Clinch 22nd FKF Premier League Title as AFC Leopards Stumble in Kericho

Gor Mahia Clinch 22nd FKF Premier League Title as AFC Leopards Stumble in Kericho

Gor Mahia are champions of the 2025/26 FKF Premier League after rivals AFC Leopards fell 2-1 away to APS Bomet on Sunday, giving K’Ogalo an unassailable lead with two matches remaining.

The result sealed a record-extending 22nd league crown for the Nairobi giants, further cementing their status as Kenya’s most successful club. In an unusual twist, Gor Mahia secured the title without playing. Their scheduled fixture against Mara Sugar was suspended following a Sports Disputes Tribunal ruling over the match venue. All they needed was for AFC Leopards to drop points in Kericho, and APS Bomet delivered.

APS Bomet produced the biggest upset of the season at Green Stadium, overturning AFC Leopards with a spirited second-half performance under coach Sammy “Pamzo” Omollo. Philip Wasai scored twice for the hosts, while Ingwe’s late push fell short.

AFC Leopards entered the match knowing only a win would keep the title race alive. The defeat left them four points behind Gor Mahia with one game to play, mathematically ending their challenge.

Gor Mahia’s path to the title was built on consistency rather than drama. The club maintained pressure at the summit through defensive discipline, key derby results, and strong away form. The defining moment came on April 26, when a 1-0 win over AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby opened a critical gap heading into the final stretch.

For much of the campaign, the title race remained tight. At one point, only two points separated the Nairobi rivals, with Ingwe mounting their strongest challenge in years. AFC Leopards revived hopes of ending a decades-long title drought with wins over Mara Sugar, Ulinzi Stars, and Murang’a Seal.

But losses to Kenya Police and Gor Mahia during the closing weeks proved costly. Gor Mahia, by contrast, managed high-pressure fixtures without dropping points, showing the composure that has defined their dominance in the modern FKF Premier League era.

Midfield creativity, defensive solidity, and decisive contributions from senior players carried K’Ogalo through. Former club star Austin Odhiambo had been part of the setup earlier in the season before his move abroad, but the squad maintained depth across all departments.

The title reinforces Gor Mahia’s dominance in Kenyan football. Their 22 league championships put them well ahead of every other club, and the win strengthens their record in the FKF Premier League era, where they have consistently set the benchmark for domestic and continental qualification.

With the league secured, Gor Mahia can now shift focus to finishing the season strongly and preparing for CAF interclub competition. Key decisions lie ahead on squad reinforcement, coaching structure, and the club’s FKF Cup campaign.

For AFC Leopards, the defeat is a painful reminder of how narrow the margins have become. Ingwe showed clear improvement this season and demonstrated that the gap to Gor Mahia is narrowing. But crucial losses in the run-in highlighted the need for greater consistency if they are to end their long wait for a league title.

Gor Mahia’s celebrations have already begun among the Green Army faithful. The club’s ability to win the league with games to spare, and without kicking a ball on the decisive day, underscored a season where they consistently stayed a step ahead.

Attention now turns to the final fixtures, continental qualification, and the summer transfer window. For Kenyan football, the result sets up another chapter in the Mashemeji rivalry, with AFC Leopards showing enough this season to suggest next year’s race could be even closer.
