Germany vs Curacao: Four-Time Champions Bid to Avoid Historic World Cup Shock

Germany will be out to avoid what would rank among the greatest upsets in World Cup history when they open their 2026 campaign against Curacao in Houston on Sunday.

The Group E clash marks a first-ever World Cup appearance for Curacao, a Caribbean nation of fewer than 160,000 people that has become the smallest country by both population and area to reach the finals.

For Germany, it’s a chance to reset after back-to-back group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022, a run that has bruised the four-time champions’ reputation.

    The Weight on Germany

Julian Nagelsmann’s side comes into the tournament in excellent form, winning each of their last nine matches in all competitions. That run includes four friendlies this year against Switzerland, Ghana, Finland, and World Cup co-hosts USA. Confidence is high, but so is the pressure.

Germany’s last two World Cups ended in shock group-stage eliminations. In Russia 2018 they finished bottom of a group with Mexico, Sweden, and South Korea. In Qatar 2022 they went out behind Japan and Spain despite beating Costa Rica on the final day. Anything less than a deep run in 2026 will be seen as failure.

Group E also includes Ivory Coast and Ecuador, and the expanded 48-team format means even third place could be enough to reach the knockout round. Still, Germany will expect to top the group. Anything other than a comfortable win over Curacao would bring immediate criticism, given the gulf in rankings, resources, and pedigree.

Nagelsmann has a full-strength squad and is expected to field an attacking lineup. The focus will be on a fast start to kill any hope of a Curacao upset early. Germany’s recent friendlies showed improved pressing and chance creation, but questions remain about defensive concentration after lapses in past tournaments.

    Curacao’s Historic Moment

For Curacao, just being in Houston is already a victory. The Blue Wave topped their qualifying group last November to book a ticket to the World Cup, a staggering achievement for a nation without a professional domestic league and a player pool largely drawn from the Dutch football system.

Dick Advocaat’s side sits 82nd in the FIFA rankings. They lost 4-1 to Scotland in one of two pre-tournament friendlies at the end of May, but bounced back with a 4-0 win over neighbors Aruba. Expectations are modest: even a single point this summer would be regarded as a huge success.

Yet there is quality in the squad. Many Curacao players were born in the Netherlands and play in the Eredivisie or lower European leagues. They bring tactical discipline and technical ability that could trouble complacent opponents.

In Advocaat, they also have a standout head coach. The 78-year-old Dutchman has managed Netherlands, Russia, South Korea, and Sunderland, and his experience in tournament football is vast. He will have a plan to stay compact, frustrate Germany, and hit on the break.
