Haaland's Double Stuns Brazil As Norway Reach Historic World Cup Quarter-finals

Haaland's Double Stuns Brazil As Norway Reach Historic World Cup Quarter-finals

Erling Haaland broke Brazil’s heart and made Norwegian history in 11 minutes of madness.

Two late goals from the Manchester City striker inspired a dramatic 2-1 victory over Brazil at MetLife Stadium, sending Norway into the World Cup quarter-finals for the very first time and knocking the five-time champions out in the Round of 16.

It was the upset of the 2026 tournament. Brazil had looked in control. They had the chances, the possession, and even a penalty in the 13th minute. But they left the door open. And when Haaland gets half a chance, he kicks it down.

Brazil started fast and were handed a golden opportunity early. After a VAR review, referee Szymon Marciniak pointed to the spot when Kristoffer Ajer was adjudged to have fouled Matheus Cunha. Bruno Guimarães stepped up but his weak penalty was saved comfortably by Ørjan Nyland. The save kept it 0-0 and it turned out to be the turning point.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side dominated the ball after that. Vinícius Júnior terrorised the right side, Endrick ran channels, and Neymar dropped deep looking to unlock Norway’s back line. But Leo Østigård and Kristoffer Ajer held firm. Norway, set up by Ståle Solbakken, were happy to sit deep, absorb, and wait for their moment to release Haaland.

For 78 minutes that moment didn’t come. Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhães did a job on him. Haaland had barely touched the ball. The first half ended 0-0 and Brazil had to be wondering how.

The second half slowed in the New Jersey heat. Then Norway flipped the script. Solbakken brought on fresh legs, including Andreas Schjelderup, and Norway started keeping the ball. Martin Ødegaard began pulling strings. Patrick Berg and Sander Berge dictated tempo.

The change paid off in the 79th minute. Schjelderup picked up the ball on the left, beat his man, and floated a cross to the back post. Haaland, who had been quiet all night, attacked it. He rose above the Brazil defense and powered a header past Alisson. 1-0 Norway. The Norwegian section exploded. It was Haaland’s sixth of the tournament.

Brazil threw everything forward. But the space they left behind killed them.

In the 90th minute Schjelderup struck again, this time winning the ball high up the pitch. He slipped Haaland in behind. One touch, then a low, hard finish past Alisson. 2-0. That was seven goals for Haaland at the World Cup, pulling him level with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.

Brazil got a lifeline in stoppage time when Østigård brought down Casemiro in the box. Neymar stepped up and scored to make it 2-1. But there was no time left. The whistle blew seconds later.

“This is one of the greatest moments in Norwegian football history. The players showed unity, discipline, and belief. Erling is special, but this was a team win.” the coach said.

Norway will now face England in the quarter-finals, carrying the confidence of a team that has just eliminated one of football's greatest nations.
