Chelsea transfer news: defensive clear-out planned after Lacroix signing

Chelsea are laying the groundwork for a new era under Xabi Alonso, and the first major signal of change has come in defense. The Blues have completed the signing of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, a move that is now set to trigger a significant clear-out at Stamford Bridge.

The arrival of the France international gives Alonso his first marquee defensive addition. Lacroix impressed during his spell at Selhurst Park with his pace, aerial dominance and composure on the ball, and Chelsea’s recruitment team believe he can provide an immediate upgrade to a backline that has lacked consistency in recent seasons.

The problem for Chelsea is numbers. Lacroix’s arrival takes the club’s senior centre-back count to nine. That is a figure no manager would realistically carry into a season.

According to club sources, the hierarchy have already informed Alonso’s staff that the squad must be trimmed before the transfer window closes. The target is to settle on a core group of four, with the rest made available for transfer.

Alonso has reportedly identified his preferred quartet. Lacroix, Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi and Josh Acheampong. That leaves five other defenders facing uncertain futures at the club.

The list of players Chelsea are willing to offload features a mix of high-profile names and younger prospects who have fallen down the pecking order.

Trevoh Chalobah is the furthest along. Italian side Como have registered strong interest and negotiations over a transfer fee are ongoing. Once an agreement is reached, the Cobham graduate is expected to move to Serie A for the first time in his career.

Wesley Fofana is the most high-profile name on the potential exit list. The Frenchman arrived from Leicester City for big money but has endured a torrid time with injuries. When fit, he has shown the quality that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after defenders. But persistent setbacks have prevented him from building any momentum. Chelsea’s new regime are now prepared to cut ties if a suitable offer arrives.

The remaining three are Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo and Mamadou Sarr. All three have featured for Chelsea in the last 18 months but none are viewed as part of Alonso’s long-term plans. Badiashile and Adarabioyo have struggled for regular minutes, while Sarr is considered surplus after failing to break into the first-team setup. The club will now seek permanent moves for the trio rather than further loan spells.

Chelsea will push to get deals done quickly, but the club acknowledge that not all five may leave before the deadline. The market for centre-backs is competitive, and valuations will need to match what Chelsea are asking.

If suitable destinations are not found, those players will remain in the squad for the 2026/27 season. That would leave Alonso with a bloated defensive group, something he is keen to avoid as he looks to implement his system and keep the squad tight and focused.

The clear-out reflects a broader shift at Chelsea. After years of stockpiling players, the club under new ownership and now under Alonso are prioritizing a smaller, higher-quality squad with clear roles. Defense is the first area to feel that impact.

Lacroix is expected to slot straight into the starting XI in pre-season and will compete directly with Colwill for the left-sided centre-back role, with Disasi and Acheampong providing cover and competition on the right.
