The 35th Premier League season kicks off tonight at the Emirates, where champions Arsenal host Coventry City, a club back in the top flight after 25 years in the wilderness.
It is a fixture that tells two very different stories. For Arsenal, the wait is finally over, for Coventry, the wait has been even longer.
When these two sides last met in a league game, Arsenal were still at Highbury, Coventry were managed by Gordon Strachan, and Robbie Keane was leading their attack. That was April 2001. Coventry lost 2-1, were relegated weeks later, and then disappeared into a spiral of administration, ground-shares, League Two, and near extinction.
Tonight, 25 years later, they walk out as Championship champions and standing opposite them is a team that knows exactly what it feels like to wait.
On May 17th, Mikel Arteta's Arsenal beat Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor. They then had to watch. Manchester City needed to beat Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium to take the title race to the final day. City drew 1-1. Arsenal were champions with a game to spare.
The final table read Arsenal 85 points, Manchester City 78, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool completing the top five to take advantage of England's fifth Champions League spot. It was Arsenal's 14th English title, their 4th Premier League title, and their first since the Invincibles of 2003/04.
They did it with defence. David Raya won a third successive Golden Glove with 19 clean sheets. Only City scored more than their 69 goals. They led the league for 200 days, lost the lead on goals scored in late April, then won four straight games without conceding to reclaim it.
It was redemption for Arteta, who had finished second three years in a row.
Now comes the harder part, doing it again. No Arsenal side has retained the title since 1935. No team outside Manchester City has retained the title since Manchester United in 2009.
If there were doubts about rust after the World Cup, Arsenal eased them last Sunday. At the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Arsenal faced Manchester City in the Community Shield. City were without Pep Guardiola for the first time since 2016, now led by interim-turned-permanent coach Enzo Maresca.
Arsenal won 3-0, and the speed of the start set the tone. Riccardo Calafiori opened the scoring after just 30 seconds, before Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard completed the win.
It was classified as a friendly, but the nature of it mattered. Havertz, now operating as the central nine after 18 league goals last season, looked sharp. Odegaard, who missed two months last season with an ankle injury, looked fit. And debutants Bruno Guimaraes, signed from Newcastle for £62m, and Christos Tzolis both started.
The World Cup complicates this opener. Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were both part of the England side that reached the semi-finals in Dallas, losing to Argentina. They returned to training at London Colney only on August 12th. Both came off the bench in the Community Shield.
Saka is expected to come straight back in for Noni Madueke, who has impressed on the right in pre-season. Rice is more uncertain. He played through a knee issue in the last two months of last season and Arteta may not risk him from the start against a physical Coventry midfield. That could mean Myles Lewis-Skelly, linked with a move to Atletico Madrid all summer, continues in central midfield alongside Guimaraes.
At the back, Arsenal are short. William Saliba is out with a hamstring injury picked up in the US tour game against AC Milan. Jurrien Timber has an ankle sprain. That means Ben White at right-back and Cristhian Mosquera partnering Gabriel in the middle.
If Arteta's story is about breaking a drought, Lampard's is about rebuilding a reputation. When Lampard took over Coventry in November 2024, they were 17th in the Championship. He took them to 8th, then last season to 95 points, scoring 82 goals and conceding just 34. It was the highest points total in the Championship since Leicester's 102 in 2013/14.
The style is not the expansive Chelsea Lampard of 2019. It is pragmatic, fast in transition, built on set pieces and the Championship's best defence. Ellis Simms scored 22 league goals. Haji Wright added 14 before his ACL tear in March.
Coventry have backed him. Eight signings have arrived, with a clear Premier League flavour. Carl Rushworth from Brighton in goal, Frank Onyeka from Brentford to add steel, Loum Tchaouna from Lazio on the wing, and Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt at centre-back.
Tonight they will be without Wright and Luke Woolfenden. Jack Rudoni faces a late test.
The key duel will be on Arsenal's left. Coventry's right side, Milan van Ewijk and Tchaouna, is their creative outlet. Van Ewijk created 11 goals from right-back last season. They will face Calafiori and Tzolis, a new pairing that looked defensively loose in pre-season against Paris Saint-Germain.
In midfield, if Rice does not start, Grimes vs Guimaraes will decide who controls tempo. Grimes completed more passes than any player in the Championship last season.
For Arsenal, the question is how much of last season's control they can retain. They averaged 61.2% possession last season, the second highest in the league. Against a deep Coventry block, they will need Odegaard to find space between the lines.
Nothing is decided in August. But history says the opener matters. In the last ten Premier League seasons, the eventual champions have won their opening game eight times. For Coventry, survival is the goal. The three relegated teams last season, West Ham, Burnley, Wolves, all went down with 31 points or fewer. The model to follow is Sunderland, who came up with Coventry in 2025 and finished 7th last season and qualified for Europe.
A strong start for Arsenal or Coventry could set the tone for the rest of the campaign.
