Veteran Ugandan Opposition Figure DR. Kizza Besigye was allegedly abducted in Nairobi Kenya, while attending the book launch of a Kenyan Politician, Narc Party leader, Martha Karua.
NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has detailed the last moments of the Ugandan opposition leader before he was arrested.
Karua disclosed that Besigye arrived in Nairobi on Saturday, November 16, and checked into the Waridi Paradise Hotel and Suites.
"The driver waited for him in the basement parking from about 4:30 p.m. to late evening until around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday when he gave up and left, having received no response to his several messages.
"Kizza Besigye was scheduled to attend and speak at Hon. Martha Karua’s book launch on Sunday, the 17th of November, where he was a no-show. We suspect that Dr. Bessigye may have been abducted after he was dropped at the Riverside Apartments, most likely by Ugandan authorities working in cahoots with and facilitated by Kenyan authorities," karua stated.
On Wednesday morning, Besigye's wife, Winnie Byanyima, pleaded with the Ugandan authorities to release her husband.
"I request the government of Uganda to release my husband Dr. Kizza Besigye from where he is being held immediately. He was kidnapped last Saturday while he was in Nairobi for Martha Karua’s book launch," she said.
Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has disclosed that he has not spoken to anyone since his arrest in Nairobi.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, November 20, in Uganda at a location where he is being held, Besigye noted that he has not even briefed his lawyers since the incident.
"I have not been in contact with any person since I was arrested in Nairobi, so I could not have any brief with any lawyers. I will be having my own lawyers, but I haven't briefed them," Besigye remarked.
Kenyan Political leaders have reacted to the alleged abduction in shock, stating such an incident shouldn't be taken lightly.
" I am deeply concerned that Uganda's opposition leader, Kizza Besigye, has gone missing while on a visit to Nairobi. This is a serious situation that requires immediate attention" Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka said.
Siaya Governor James orengo had this to say, "It is disturbing to learn that Kizza Besigye, a well known Ugandan patriot and prominent political leader, was abducted in Nairobi and driven across the border to Uganda against his will, having entered Kenya lawfully."
"The most disturbing question in this saga is that the abduction was carried out by elements of Kenya’s security organs. And if that was not so then it would raise fundamental questions about the ability and authority of our security agencies." Orengo added.
