PFF raises alarm over Kizza Besigye’s worsening health in detention

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has raised urgent alarms over the condition of its leader, Dr Kizza Besigye, saying his health is rapidly worsening while in detention.

According to the party, reliable sources indicate that Besigye was moved late at night from Luzira Prison to a medical centre at Bugolobi Village Mall under heavy security. No further information has been disclosed regarding his condition or the care he received.

“It is a tragedy that a man who has dedicated his life to the health and freedom of others is being denied his own right to medical dignity,” the statement read on Tuesday.

The party held the authorities directly responsible, stating, “We hold the regime and the prison authorities fully accountable for his well-being.”

It also demanded immediate access for Besigye’s family and personal doctors, calling on them to be allowed “unrestricted entry” to attend to him.

PFF reiterated that his detention violates the law, insisting, “We reiterate that Dr Besigye is being held in total disregard of the law. He must be freed to receive the care he deserves.”

Supporters were asked to stay alert and pray for the leader’s safety.

“We ask all compatriots and lovers of freedom to keep Besigye in your prayers and to remain vigilant,” the party said, adding that it would continue to provide updates as new information emerged from its teams on the ground.

Concerns over Besigye’s health are not new.

The Ugandan opposition figure has been in detention since November 2024 and has faced multiple arrests, including his most recent on November 16, 2024, in Nairobi while attending Martha Karua’s book launch.

Four days later, he and Hajj Lutale were presented before a military court in Kampala on charges of possessing an illegal firearm. They pleaded not guilty and were remanded at Luzira Maximum Security Prison. In January 2025, a military court ruled he could be tried for treachery.

During a court appearance on February 14 at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Court, Besigye looked frail, with sunken eyes and gaunt features that suggested prolonged poor care.

Senior Counsel Martha Karua highlighted his struggles with dizziness and said, “It is concerning that the health of Besigye has been greatly compromised by his lengthy and unnecessary incarceration.”

Human rights organisations have continued to express alarm over his detention and the broader political tensions it has caused in Uganda.
