Ruto Thanks Uhuru For Peacefully Handing Over Power

KENYA: President William Ruto has commended former President Uhuru Kenyatta for his statesmanship in ensuring a peaceful transfer of power after the 2022 General elections.

President Ruto had paid a courtesy call to the Former President at his Gatundu home in Kiambu County on Monday, December 9, 2024, for consultations on leadership among other issues.

The relationship between the two leaders has been rocky, despite the duo serving for two-five year terms under the Jubilee administration.

Current President Ruto, then serving as Deputy President to Uhuru, alleged the state was against him, decrying security withdrawal, impeachment plots and official duties denial among other things.

Leading up to the 2022 General Elections, Ruto intensified campaigns against 'Dynasties' like the Kenyatta Family, pledging to 'deal with them' and facilitate their downfall if elected. Ruto, fuelled this by championing for Empowerment of 'hustlers', which ultimately saw him rise to the top seat.

Uhuru Kenyatta then as President, had backed-down on an 'agreement' to support Ruto's Presidential Bid, once he completed his two terms. However, Uhuru instead opted to support Azimio Coalition Presidential Candidate Raila Odinga, who lost to William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza.

Meanwhile, the Pre and Post Election 'bad blood' between the trio, Ruto, Uhuru and Raila, now seems to be water under the bridge. President William Ruto has since formed a Government of National Unity, incorporating Leaders affiliated to the Raila-led Orange Democratic Movement Party, in his administration.

President Ruto and Former President Uhuru, now seems to be warming up to each other, having met last month in Embu during ordination of a Catholic Bishop, their first meet since Kenyatta handed over power, and now Ruto's visit to the Former President in his home.

The head of state, has lauded the Former President, for laying a strong foundation that has enabled the implementation of key programs under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, including the Affordable Housing Project.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has called for the Prompt Resolution of the Court Cases, regarding the constitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection Panel to facilitate the appointment of the Body's Commissioners.

The Former President, has advised Ruto to ensure there's more transparency under his administration, stating that even the best policies tend to become contentious and opposed, if conducted in secrecy.

Both leaders, have called upon friends of Kenya and International Partners, to support the Candidacy of Raila Odinga for the Position of the Chairperson, African Union Commission. The duo, has expressed confidence in Odinga's ability to steer the continent to prosperity. The Azimio Chief, is seeking to head the African Body, as he faces stiff competition from a Djibouti Candidate. Elections are scheduled for Next Year.
