The Philippine parliament has voted to impeach Vice-President Sara Duterte following allegations of corruption and threats against President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.
Duterte is accused of misappropriating millions of dollars in public funds and allegedly threatening to have Marcos assassinated.
She has denied the accusations, claiming she is the victim of a political vendetta.
The move, seen as a dramatic escalation of the ongoing feud between Duterte and Marcos, has left the nation in shock.
Out of 306 members of the House of Representatives, 215 voted for impeachment — well above the required one-third majority.
The case will now proceed to the Senate, which will convene as an impeachment court. If found guilty, Duterte faces removal from office and a lifetime ban from public service.
Despite the charges, Duterte will remain in office until the Senate delivers its verdict. A trial date has not yet been announced.
Duterte, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, was initially seen as a strong contender for the presidency in 2022 but opted to run alongside Marcos, securing a landslide victory.
Analysts say their alliance crumbled over differing political agendas and key diplomatic issues, with Marcos shifting the nation back toward the US while distancing from China.
