KENYA : Suna East Member Of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohammed who has been serving as the Minority leader in Parliament has declared his capability and readiness to lead the National Assembly as the new majority leader.
Speaking on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in a heated Parliamentary session, the legislator vouched for his capability for the task ahead and confirmed his readiness to take over from Kikuyu Mp Kimani Ichung'wah.
" I’m capable, I have the capacity and qualifications to lead. I have everything it takes to be the majority leader. I’m a seasoned politician of this house and know how the business is conducted in this house,” said Junet.
The politician has further lauded the high Court's ruling that confirmed the new positions, adding that he wasted little time in adjusting to his new position.
“We arrived here as a majority but for your ruling but ended up losing the numbers through your ruling. We went to court and the Court made a ruling albeit late. It’s better late than never. It said we are the majority. I so happen to be a minority leader so i switched and took the majority role,” Junet stated.
The MP further asked the parliamentarians across the aisle to emulate their decision during the contested 2022 elections and expect to respect the ruling as he termed as a precedent for Kenya.
“The issue we need to analyse is that we need to respect the court ruling. They are important. We disputed the election results and went to court. When the courts ruled against us, we abided by the ruling. This too must be respected. It’s the ruling of the court of the Republic of Kenya,” he said.
“I want to allay fears that the majority must come from the ruling party. This ruling is for posterity. Next, in elections, we may have a government where the president does not have a majority in parliament. It doesn’t mean that business cannot be conducted. This is a precedent that our arms of government are independent,” he concluded.
The development comes following the landmark ruling by the courts on the status of the current National Assembly made by the Milimani High Court.
A three-judge bench declared the Raila Odinga led Azimio la Umoja coalition as the majority party in the National Assembly.
In their ruling issued on Friday, February 7, Justices John Chigiti, Lawrence Mugambi and Jairus Ngaah overturned a ruling that had been issued by NA Speaker Moses Wetang'ula who ruled that President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza was the majority side.
The judges noted that the Speaker violated the constitution in his decision.
In particular, the judges stated that the speaker counted some parties which had defected from Azimio in favour of Kenya Kwanza.
The bench also added that there was no evidence to show that there was a post-election agreement between the defected parties and Kenya Kwanza.
“The Speaker cannot fault the Registrar of Political Parties. She could not provide what she did not have. The Speaker ought to have presented the agreements that were allegedly submitted during the debate. Without the post-election coalition agreements, he had no basis for his decision,” the court ruled.
Following the ruling, a section of leaders have pushed for the Speaker to effect changes based on the ruling by the court.
"Speaker Wetangula, be bold, respect the court’s pronouncement and Declare Junet Mohamed as Majority Leader and Millie Odhiambo as the Majority Whip," Migori Senator Eddy Oketch stated.
On the other hand, the three-judge bench dealt Wetang'ula a blow when the judges ruled that he could not be the speaker and the party leader of Ford Kenya at the same time.
“The dual role is unlawful and unconstitutional. Once he became Speaker of the National Assembly, he ceased to be the leader of Ford Kenya," the judges ruled.
