The Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), led by Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, has formally initiated the process of withdrawing from the Kenya Kwanza alliance. The party has issued a 30-day notice signaling its intent to exit the coalition, marking a significant political shift.
Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu has confirmed that her office has officially received the notification from the party.
This move suggests potential realignments within the country's political landscape as the party reassesses its affiliations and future strategy.
Muturi who is the party leader of the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) signed the coalition agreement to effectively join the Kenya Kwanza alliance on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at the Hermosa Hotel in Karen, Nairobi.
Muturi, back then revealed that he had consulted widely before joining the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
“Kenya is bigger than all of us. I am happy after several consultations today we have realised that dream of working together and building a prosperous Kenya,” he said.
Ruto, who was a Deputy President then, said the agreement has been a result of months of consultations and highlighted the importance of the Democratic Party that was once led by retired President Mwai Kibaki.
“The joining of the Democratic Party to Kenya Kwanza is significant as they bring on board the economic conversation led by Kibaki,” he said.
A section of politicians with ties to the Democratic Party (DP) however wrote to the Registrar of Political Parties imploring her to reject the coalition agreement between the party and the Kenya Kwanza alliance.
DP’s Secretary General Wambugu Nyamu, who was one of the three signatories in the letter seen by JULISHA.CO.KE, objected to the coalition agreement on the grounds that the party settled on not joining any political alliances ahead of the August polls at its National Delegates Convention (NDC) held on February 20, 2022.
“Having attended the NDC, we are therefore surprised by the announcement by the Party leader Justin Muturi this morning that the Party has joined the Kenya Kwanza Coalition in complete violation, disregard and subversion of the will of the party members as conveyed in the resolutions of the NDC,” the read letter in Part.
However, the Party Went ahead to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration with Justin Muturi later landing an Appointment in Government as a Cabinet Secretary.
The Cs, has in recent months been at loggerheads with the Government, with his recent move to withdraw the Party from the Kenya Kwanza Coalition coming days after the President And ODM leader Raila Odinga signed a Pact.
The reasons behind the decision are yet to be fully disclosed, but it is expected that party officials will provide further details in due course.
