Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has deconstructed the opposition that is garnering support to oust President William Ruto's administration come 2027.
Ms. Kihika, claims that considering the candidates who have expressed interest in the top seat, Ruto's re-election is inevitable.
The Governor, took a swipe at opposition figures, noting that Jubilee Party's candidate Fred Matiang’i has too many 'skeletons in his closet. She opined that the former Interior Cs is overrated and allegedly has 'Blood on his hands' in reference to bodies pulled from River Yala during the Uhuru tenure, when Matiang’i served as the Ministry of Interior Cabinet Secretary.
Ms. Kihika, downplayed any impact that Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa and Kalonzo Musyoka might have in the 2027 General Elections, noting the trio are just 'loud' but ordinary.
She slammed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has been a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza administration since his impeachment.
" Matiang'i is overrated, and he has River Yala garbage which we can dig up anytime, Karua is usual news, Wamalwa is nothing, Kalonzo is peculiar and ordinary news, Gachagua is impeached and useles" Governor Kihika said.
The Governor exuded confidence in the Kenya-kwanza administration, emphasising that President Ruto will fulfill promises he made to the Citizenry and realize the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
She urged Kenyans and Leaders alike to support the government as it implements its manifesto and works to unite the Citizenry.
Governor Kihika, also reassured Nakuru residents of her administration's commitment to Youth Empowerment through job Creation, development of Infrastructure like roads and better service delivery in the health sector among others.
Her remarks come in the wake of several leaders who have declared their interest in the 2027 State House race.
On Friday, Matiang'i launched a series of nationwide meetings from his home region of Kisii and Nyamira counties, to rally regional and national support for his bid. “Our country is in a deep crisis. It needs an honest, just, bold and fearless leader,” he told supporters.
Addressing a rally at Gusii Stadium on May 2, 2025, Matiang’i stated that he is ready to run for the presidency, saying Kenya needs urgent fixing. He announced that he had finally decided to pursue the country’s top seat following numerous requests from Kenyans.
“I am ready to be President of Kenya,” Matiang’i declared as the crowd erupted in cheers.
He announced that he would now resign from his World Bank assignment and officially begin his 2027 presidential bid.
“You have asked me to come and serve this country. Do you want me to leave that job and come back to serve you? I will now resign officially, with respect, and come back to Kenya to serve my country,” he said.
The former CS acknowledged Kenya’s many challenges, saying that, as he had shown before, he could deliver a better Kenya if elected President.
“As you know, I have no problem executing any job, whether at night or during the day — that won’t be a problem,” he said, urging the Gusii community to register as voters ahead of 2027. "Kenya has challenges, but I want to ask you not to lose hope in our country. We are a nation built on resilience. Let’s join hands, and when the time comes, we will fix and make our country better.” he added.
Matiang'i's declaration ended speculations about his 2027 political plans. It also adds to a fresh headache for President William Ruto and the Kenya-kwanza administration's re-election bid.
Others who have expressed interest in the top seat is Former Chief Justice David Maraga, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, Wiper Party Leader and Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Senior Counsel alias Iron Lady Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa.
