Nairobi, June 10 ; Kenyan President William Ruto has expressed his readiness to work with all leaders in transforming the country, underscoring the need for National Unity holds far greater value than personal political victories.
Speaking in State House Nairobi on Tuesday, the head of state reiterated his agenda of uniting Kenyans, including 'Cousins' - a popular phrase recently coined by Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua - as he challenged political players to shelve personal gains.
Sloganeering has always been a critical element of the Kenyan political game since time immemorial. Players often craft slogans and phrases as rallying calls to woo supporters into their respective political agendas.
For the better part of Saturday, June 7, "cousins" was among the topics in the trending charts of the Kenyan internet, coined by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, who seemed to attract the natives of the Bantu subcommunities into his fold.
He came up with the idea while addressing the residents of Ukambani; he said the Ukambani people are cousins to those from central Kenya, where he hails from, going ahead to caution President William Ruto from attacking the formation.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto, seemingly not one to shy away from a challenge, had his opinion on the viral cousins phrase.
Speaking when he met AIPCA leaders at State House, President Ruto said that he desires and plans to preach unity among Kenyans to be one nation.
“The way AIPCA has united and become one, and God blessed them now they are a big Church, is the same way as the President of this country, my desire and plans are to unite Kenya to become one,” the President said.
Ruto, reiterated that as the head of state, he will leave no stone unturned in his unification bid, stating that he will include Cousins in the fold.
“It is my responsibility as the leader of this nation to unite everyone, brothers, cousins, neighbours and enemies. All of them. I will unite them to be one nation.” he said.
Ruto stated that it is a collective obligation for Kenyans to work together to unite the nation and reject any attempts that divide the nation along tribal lines.
" Let us stay focused on our shared development aspirations, which promise inclusive growth for all,” Ruto said.
He further stated that the government remains committed to working with leaders across the political spectrum to confront the challenges facing Kenyans and to implement programmes and projects that fast-track the country’s socio-economic transformation.
Gachagua, ousted from office last year becoming Kenya's first Deputy President to be impeached under the new constitution, has on numerous occasions stated that he cannot work with the head of state again.
" I have no political business I can transact with William Ruto. Going forward I am going to look for the likes of Fred Matiang'i, Kalonzo Musyoka, Natembeya, Martha Karua to create a 2002 movement like the one Kibaki had in 2027 in order to save this Country." said the former DP during a recent interview.
" We will sit down plan at least on how people can get good healthcare and create a good environment for businesses to thrive"
