It's not automatic that we will support Ruto in 2027 - Millie Odhiambo

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo has declared that the opposition’s support for President William Ruto in the 2027 general election is not guaranteed, and suggested that the president could instead be asked to rally behind Raila Odinga.

Speaking on the ongoing political conversations around national unity and inclusivity, the outspoken MP pushed back against the idea that the opposition is set to back Ruto unconditionally.

Odhiambo reminded observers that all political directions remain open and negotiable, emphasising that future political alliances will depend on meaningful negotiations rather than assumptions or expectations.

“It’s not automatic that it is a must that it is Ruto that we will support in 2027. We can also ask the president to support Odinga. It is an issue of negotiation,” said Odhiambo.

Her comments come as discussions about a broad-based government and dialogue between former rivals continue to stir speculation about future realignments. However, Odhiambo made it clear that any partnership must be based on mutual benefit and not political convenience.

She also defended Odinga against criticism over his recent decisions, particularly his choice to engage in dialogue during tense political periods. According to the MP, the ODM leader acted in the country’s interest by placing national unity above political gain.

“We went through difficult times. So, for him to choose to move the country forward, nobody should blame him for that,” she said.

Odhiambo praised Odinga’s approach, describing it as a reflection of true leadership and a strong commitment to Kenya’s stability. She said his decision to prioritise peace showed foresight and dedication to the country’s long-term well-being.

The MP emphasised that the formation of a broad-based government involving both Kenya Kwanza and opposition leaders is not only necessary but also timely in promoting inclusive governance.

Odhiambo said such a government can help steady the political environment and bring different voices together for the good of the country.

She insisted that ODM should not be boxed into any predetermined outcome and maintained that Raila remains a strong national leader who is still deserving of support, even from the sitting President.
