The United Opposition has appointed former Kimilili MP and former United Nations trade chief Mukhisa Kituyi as its spokesperson and head of secretariat, a move aimed at strengthening the alliance’s leadership structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
The announcement was made on Wednesday evening by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who confirmed the decision in a social media post.
Kituyi, 67, brings decades of experience in politics, governance and diplomacy. He served as Kenya’s Minister of Trade and Industry between 2002 and 2007 before heading the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development from 2013 to 2021.
He resigned from the UN role to pursue a presidential bid in 2022 but later stepped aside to back Raila Odinga’s candidacy.
The United Opposition, though still an informal alliance, brings together six parties: Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party, Musyoka’s Wiper Patriotic Front, Martha Karua’s People’s Liberation Party, Eugene Wamalwa’s Democratic Action Party Kenya, Justin Muturi’s Democratic Party, and Jubilee which chairman Torome Saitoti represents with the backing of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi is also part of the coordination team.
The bloc has no formal coalition agreement but is positioning itself as the nucleus of an anti Ruto front. Its leaders including Gachagua, Musyoka, Karua, Wamalwa, Muturi, Matiang’i, Linturi and now Kituyi have been holding consultations to consolidate forces ahead of the next general election.
By appointing Kituyi as its chief spokesperson, the group hopes to project unity and credibility while drawing on his expertise in trade diplomacy and policy strategy.
His international stature, observers suggest, could help the alliance court both domestic and external legitimacy as it seeks to challenge President William Ruto’s re election bid in 2027.
