ORPP issues seven conditions to political parties ahead of November by-elections

Political parties seeking to contest in the November 27 by-elections have been handed a seven-point compliance checklist by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).

The directives issued on Friday are aimed at ensuring proper structures, transparency, and adherence to electoral rules before the polls.

The first condition requires all parties to provide the ORPP with the names and specimen signatures of their authorised signatories for nomination certificates by September 17.

They must also establish both election management teams and internal dispute resolution committees within their party structures before fielding candidates.

Another instruction obligates the parties to submit verified membership registers to the ORPP.

They are further expected to forward comprehensive nomination schedules, including venues, dates, nomination procedures, and the full list of aspirants to be nominated.

The ORPP also ordered that the nomination details be uploaded on party websites and made public on the ORPP website at least one week before the nomination exercise.

Parties are further required to strictly follow the timelines and submission processes jointly agreed with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The final requirement is compliance with the legal framework governing elections, including the code of conduct, electoral regulations, and gazette notices.

On November 27, the IEBC will hold 24 by-elections across the country. These will include ward races in Angata Nanyokie (Samburu), Chemundu (Nandi), Chewani (Tana River), Fafi (Garissa),

Kariobangi North (Nairobi), Kisa East (Kakamega), Metkei (Elgeyo Marakwet), Mumbuni North (Machakos), Purko (Kajiado), and Tembelio (Uasin Gishu).

Other contests will be the Baringo Senatorial election and parliamentary by-elections in Banissa, Kasipul, Magarini, Malava, Mbeere North, and Ugunja constituencies.
