Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i have been ranked as Kenya’s most likeable political figures in a new nationwide survey released on Friday, October 31, 2025, by Research 8020 Limited.
According to the Kenya Public Opinion Poll 2025, the two leaders topped the likeability index across multiple demographics, including Generation Z, Millennials, and Generation X+, signaling a cross-generational appeal that places them ahead of veteran politicians such as President William Ruto, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Uhuru Kenyatta.
The poll, which interviewed 3,430 respondents between September and October, assessed public sentiment on Kenya’s political leadership, national direction, and presidential preferences. The results reveal a shifting political mood among Kenyans, with a growing appetite for leaders perceived as bold, relatable, and reform-oriented.
Youthful Babu tops among Gen Z
Among Gen Z voters, aged 15 to 29, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino emerged as the most likeable politician with an approval rating of 78 percent, followed closely by Fred Matiang’i at 71 percent. The survey noted that the youthful legislator, known for his charisma and aggressive political style, has cultivated strong support among younger voters who see him as a symbol of resilience and defiance against the political establishment.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta (70%), retired Chief Justice David Maraga (64%), and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna (64%) rounded out the top five in the Gen Z category. Others who registered above 60 percent include Ndindi Nyoro (63%), Okiya Omtatah (62%), and George Natembeya (62%).
The findings suggest that Babu Owino’s brand of populist politics and active online presence continue to endear him to young Kenyans. His consistent advocacy for education reforms and his outspoken defense of youth employment rights have resonated widely, making him one of the most visible MPs in the country.
Matiang’i retains broad national appeal
Dr Fred Matiang’i, the Jubilee Party’s presidential candidate for 2027, ranked as the most likeable politician overall, leading among both Millennials and older Kenyans (Gen X+). He recorded 76 percent among Millennials and 79 percent among Gen X+, outpacing other national figures such as Uhuru Kenyatta, David Maraga, and Kalonzo Musyoka.
Research 8020’s data shows that Matiang’i’s strong approval ratings cut across political and regional lines, reflecting his reputation for efficiency, integrity, and firm leadership during his tenure in government. Analysts note that his broad acceptance among both the youth and mature voters gives him a unique advantage heading into the 2027 General Election.
Nationwide, Matiang’i also leads the list of preferred presidential candidates, commanding 24 percent support compared to 21 percent for President William Ruto and 11 percent for Kalonzo Musyoka. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua follows with 6 percent, while Babu Owino garners 5 percent, placing him in the top five.
Matiang’i’s presidential bid appears particularly strong in urban counties such as Nairobi, Mombasa, Nyeri, and Busia, where he enjoys the backing of more than 40 percent of respondents. His popularity is also notable in traditionally competitive regions like Kakamega, Bungoma, and Kajiado, suggesting a broad coalition of support that could reshape Kenya’s political map.
Country headed to wrong direction
The poll further paints a grim picture of the national mood. A majority of Kenyans — 61 percent — believe the country is headed in the wrong direction, citing the high cost of living (82%), unemployment (73%), poor healthcare (47%), and corruption (36%) as their main concerns.
Despite the growing frustration, civic engagement remains strong, with 91 percent of respondents affirming their intention to vote in the 2027 elections. This indicates a politically conscious population ready to hold leaders accountable.
Political analysts interpret Babu Owino’s and Matiang’i’s rise as a reflection of Kenya’s evolving political consciousness. “Voters are increasingly gravitating toward leaders who project competence and authenticity rather than those relying on traditional ethnic or party loyalties,” said Research 8020’s lead analyst during the poll’s release.
The 2025 poll signals a shift in Kenya’s leadership preferences ahead of 2027. While President Ruto maintains significant backing, particularly in Rift Valley counties such as Uasin Gishu, Kericho, and Nandi, the data reveals that voters are warming up to new power centers led by technocrats like Matiang’i and activist politicians like Babu Owino.
As the nation inches closer to the next election cycle, the contest appears increasingly poised between continuity and change. Whether Kenyans will favor Matiang’i’s disciplined governance style or Babu Owino’s youthful energy remains to be seen — but for now, the two stand as Kenya’s most admired political figures.
