DCI Clarify Blocking Gachagua With Unmarked Subarus

KENYA : The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has addressed claims of preventing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from attending Sunday Church Service.

In a statement, on Tuesday, November 12, the security agency denied the reports published in one of the local dailies, asserting they work within the confines of the law and that they did not prevent the impeached DP from attending the Service.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) wishes to address the misleading claims published in the Daily Nation on November 11, 2024, regarding alleged attempts by detectives in unmarked Subaru cars to prevent Hon. Rigathi Gachagua from attending a church service in Nairobi.

We want to clarify that these allegations are entirely false and seem to be aimed at misrepresenting the actions and intentions of the DCI,” part of the statement read.

In a Publication, the Daily Nation revealed that detectives had reportedly gone to the home of the cleric who presided over the service which Gachagua attended and demanded to know why he wanted to host him.

According to the publication, The detectives allegedly told the priest not to allow Gachagua within the church premises, claiming that his presence would breach the peace.

Additionally, the daily Nation reported detectives did not disclose any evidence of how Gachagua could breach peace to the priest, and even after he turned up, there was no breach of the peace.

"The DCI operates within the parameters established by the rule of law and has consistently affirmed its commitment to refraining from interference in the liberties of individuals and institutions." The DCI defended themselves.

"Moreover, the claim that the writer was unable to obtain a comment from the DCI is incorrect. The Director of Criminal Investigations provided a prompt response, reaffirming the DCI’s commitment to respecting the autonomy of religious institutions, and the writer acknowledged receipt of this response,” the statement read.

The accusation, comes weeks after the now impeached Deputy President accused Security agencies in the country of being used to intimidate legislators allied to him.
