Speculation grows over Edwin Sifuna's growing ties with Kalonzo Musyoka

A meeting between Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has sparked speculation over the Secretary General's future in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Kalonzo, who met Sifuna on August 14 on the sidelines of the Law Society of Kenya’s annual conference in Kwale County, hinted at a potential political alliance as the country gears up for the 2027 general election.

Taking to social media, Kalonzo stated that he “Had a productive chat with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. Exchanged contacts. I have a feeling this connection could lead to some exciting things.”

The meeting came days after Sifuna reaffirmed his recognition of Kalonzo as a principal in the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party during an event in the Wiper leader's Ukambani backyard, despite the alliance’s current uncertainties.

On August 12, Sifuna sparked further debate after he announced a private meeting with MPs, including Babu Owino and Gathoni Wamuchomba. Details of the discussion remain undisclosed.

Their warming ties are due in part to their criticism of Raila Odinga and President William Ruto’s broad-based government.

Kalonzo, recently rejected government overtures for support, declaring that, “Anyone thinking we can be bought, intimidated, or compromised to abandon this mission is daydreaming.”

According to political commentator Mutua Kevin, Sifuna’s move is a strategic positioning for future leadership.

Mutua said the Senator is politically calculating, suggesting his overt ties with Kalonzo signal rejection of the Odinga-Ruto partnership and lay groundwork ahead of the 2027 elections.

“His alignment with Kalonzo could also provide an escape route for Raila should he abandon Ruto ahead of elections,” said Mutua.

Samuel Owida, on the other hand, noted that Sifuna’s stance reflects growing divisions within ODM, where many MPs from Luo Nyanza support Ruto, leaving the Senator politically isolated.

Sifuna’s defiance is, meanwhile, testing the patience of ODM insiders and Odinga loyalists.

His recent public criticism of ODM as "confused" and refusal to back Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid have further isolated him within the party.

The Secretary General has been labelled a renegade, with calls for his removal over his failure to align with party positions growing louder.

In July, Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma publicly demanded Sifuna’s resignation, accusing him of sowing confusion, while Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi dismissed his threats to quit as inconsequential.

“He must resign or be thrown out of ODM. The faster this happens, the better,” stated Kaluma on social media.

An ODM source told Julisha.co.ke that Sifuna “Has crossed the red line with his constant contradictions of the party and leader. His exit may be imminent.”
