In a bold move to reinforce accountability, the Isiolo County Assembly has declared the seats of four Members of County Assembly (MCAs) vacant after they missed eight consecutive sittings without permission—sending a clear message that absenteeism will no longer be tolerated.
The County Assembly of Isiolo, in its Tuesday afternoon sitting, unanimously adopted a report from the House Business, Rules and Privileges Committee recommending the dismissal of four Members who failed to attend eight consecutive sessions without the Speaker's consent.
The motion, tabled by the Leader of Majority and Sericho Ward MCA Abubakar Abdi, cited Standing Order 235(3) and Article 194(1)(b) of the Constitution of Kenya as the legal basis for the decision.
Those affected include David Lemantile (Oldonyiro Ward), Abdirashid Ali (Garbatulla Ward), Abdirun Jillo Dima (Kinna Ward), and Rahma Abdikadir (Special Elect).
The Committee noted that none of the members provided satisfactory explanations for their prolonged absence, nor did they appear before the Committee when summoned.
In accordance with Standing Order 235(5), the Speaker of the Assembly declared the four offices officially vacant without a vote, marking a significant application of constitutional oversight.
"The Assembly has demonstrated its firm commitment to upholding the Constitution and maintaining discipline among its members," the House stated.
"Attendance and active participation are not optional—they are the foundation of public trust and good governance. This resolution underscores the Assembly's resolve to protect the integrity of its proceedings and to honour the faith placed in elected leaders by the people of Isiolo.
