Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga takes over ODM leadership in acting capacity

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga takes over ODM leadership in acting capacity

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has named Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as the acting Party Leader following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, pending the election of a new substantive leader.

Speaking during a briefing at JKIA, Nairobi, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir announced that the ODM National Executive Council (NEC) had resolved to appoint Senator Oburu to act as Party Leader until the party’s top organs meet to elect Raila’s successor.

“The NEC has designated Senator Oburu to be the acting Party Leader until such a time that the party organs meet and elect a substantive leader to fill the big shoes left by our leader,” Abdulswamad said on Thursday.

He stated that the party remains united and committed to continuing Raila’s legacy of democracy and justice. He announced that condolence books have been opened in all ODM offices across the country for members, supporters, and the public to pay their respects.

“The party has opened condolence books in all our offices across the country. Members, supporters, and the general public are free to visit any of the offices at the county level to sign the condolence book. In some cases, these are also available in governor’s offices,” Abdulswamad said.

Abdulswamad reaffirmed the party’s unity and resilience, noting that ODM would remain strong beyond its founding leader.

“ODM remains united just as it was during the time of the Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga. We believe in unity of purpose, a stronger democratic party, and one that will live on for many years to come,” he said.

Kisii Governor Simba Arati described Raila as a “beacon of peace, defender of truth, and a champion of democracy,” noting that his death had left a huge gap not only in the party but across the continent.

“In his death, ODM, Kenya, Africa, and the world are mourning. We have lost a towering giant who spent his life fighting for the rights of the people and the freedoms we all enjoy today,” Arati said.

He added that the funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Dr Oburu Odinga in line with Raila’s wish to be buried within 72 hours of his death.

“We shall strictly observe the programme to the letter until the day of his burial on Sunday, October 19, 2025,” Arati stated.

The party urged its supporters nationwide to remain peaceful, united, and to honour Raila’s memory by upholding the ideals he fought for throughout his life.
