Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has condemned the violent disruption of a church service at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his entourage were in attendance on Sunday, January 25, 2026.
In a statement shared on X, Kalonzo described the events at the church as a serious violation of the Constitution and the rule of law.
“I strongly condemn the violent attack at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, where former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his team, together with unarmed leaders and civilians, are trapped inside a place of worship as live bullets and tear gas are deployed and vehicles torched outside.”
Kalonzo emphasised the sanctity of places of worship: “This is a grave and unacceptable violation of the Constitution and the rule of law. A church is a sacred and protected space. The use of force against unarmed citizens in such circumstances is unlawful and indefensible.”
He held security leadership responsible for ensuring the safety of those inside the church. “I hold the Inspector General of Police and all those responsible fully accountable for the safety of @rigathi, his team, and all civilians inside the church.”
The incident occurred during a Sunday service that had drawn congregants from the local community, including women and children.
The service was abruptly interrupted after tear gas was released, forcing worshippers to flee the sanctuary as panic spread inside the church. Some congregants required first aid after being affected by the gas, while others sought refuge outside the compound.
Outside the church, tension escalated as vehicles linked to Gachagua’s team were set ablaze. Witnesses reported the presence of armed individuals around the area, further heightening fear among civilians.
Gachagua, who was expected to address the congregation after the service, later said he and others were trapped inside the church as the chaos unfolded.
Gachagua accused President William Ruto of responsibility for the incident, stating, “William Ruto has sent a killer squad to kill us inside Witima ACK Church, Othaya.
We are marooned in church, being attacked with live bullets and tear gas, and they torched my vehicles. We ask Kenyans to pray for us to come out alive.”
