Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro dumps Ruto’s UDA, joins People's Party of Kenya

Kiharu Member of Parliament (MP) Ndindi Nyoro has formally joined the People’s Party of Kenya after parting ways with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The vocal legislator announced his move on Monday, August 17, during a media briefing, saying the decision was informed by the need to realign with a political outfit that reflects the aspirations of his electorate and the broader national conversation on leadership and service delivery.

“I, Ndindi Nyoro, together with my supporters, from today, we have joined the People’s Party of Kenya. And as members of this party, we have all officially joined the opposition" Nyoro said.

Nyoro, who has served as Kiharu MP since 2013 and previously chaired the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee, said he had consulted widely with residents, party officials and other opposition leaders before making the switch.

“I have taken time to consult almost all the opposition leaders. I have sat down with Peter Munya, Martha Karua, and James Orengo. You know Sifuna is my brother. I have sat down with Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka. I want to confirm to you, I have had almost a year-long consultation with most of them including almost for a whole year, Dr Fred Matiang’i,” he said.

He went ahead to urge Kenyans to consider the People’s Party of Kenya as the country heads into the 2027 General Election, stating that the party has leaders who can help liberate the country.

“Mkiangalia viongozi wale watapeleka Kenya mbele from next year, I also ask humbly the people of Kenya, muangalie pia People’s Party. Pia wao wako na viongozi wanaweza shikana mkono na wengine na tukomboe Kenya August of next year,” Nyoro said.

The MP said his exit from UDA was necessary, citing differences on the direction the party is taking and the need for fresh ideas in addressing the cost of living, youth unemployment and the management of public resources.

Nyoro admitted that he was disappointed with the government’s performance after winning the 2022 General Election, saying Kenya experienced a period of trial and error in the early years of the administration.

Nyoro said his experience in government had taught him that winning an election was easier than delivering on the promises made during campaigns.

“Through the lessons of campaigns and the lessons during governance, I have come to appreciate that it’s actually easier to campaign than to govern,” said Nyoro.

According to the legislator, the real challenge began after the 2022 election victory, when the government was expected to translate campaign promises into tangible results.

“The real battle was not in the campaigns. The real battle was in the deliverables that Kenyans expected,” said Nyoro.

“At some point I was disappointed, and I’m saying this again in good faith because we had a campaign,”.

Nyoro further acknowledged that the administration made mistakes as it sought to implement its agenda.

“I want to be honest with Kenyans that we engaged in a lot of trial and error, and especially the beginning years,” he said.

Nyoro emphasised that his political decisions going forward would be guided by the interests of Kenyans and the need for better governance. According to him, his experience had influenced how he intends to approach his political future as the country heads towards the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro told journalists and attendees that he will continue prioritizing development in Kiharu, including classrooms, health facilities, roads, water projects and empowerment programs for youth and women. He also pledged to remain an independent voice in Parliament, holding government to account while supporting policies that benefit ordinary citizens.

The move adds to a growing list of realignments in Mt. Kenya politics as leaders reposition ahead of 2027. Political observers say Nyoro’s decision could influence other legislators and grassroots leaders who have been weighing their options within the ruling coalition.
